Chiang Mai Chinese tourism down! Let's be a "happy family" and learn to speak Mandarin!

A crisis meeting of tourism operators at a downtown hotel heard that Chinese tourism to Chiang Mai was down by half in the first three quarters of 2018. 

 

A series of measures were proposed to woo them back - including setting up Chinese language classes to avoid misunderstandings.

The meeting attended by 100 people heard that tourists from China were down 40-50% this year. 

 

The boat tragedy in Phuket and negative publicity like the Don Muang airport security guard incident were bad for business. The Chinese were feeling disrespected, said Chiang Mai news. 

 

There were lots of cases of misunderstanding so it was proposed that the authorities - and especially governor Suphachai Iamsuwan - set up language courses. 

 

After all, said reps at the the meeting, are not 80% of Thais descended from the Chinese anyway in some way or another and aren't we all one big "happy family"? 

 

Other proposals included setting up a call center especially for the Chinese. 

 

Something has to be done, everyone agreed, though one area largely out of the operators hands was also mentioned as a cause - the strength of the baht and the relative weakness of the Yuan. 

 

A good start has been made by immigration, many agreed, with efforts made to stop under the table payments with "No Tip" signage.

 

At least the Chinese could be confident of getting the visa stamps for the price on the receipt - 2,000 baht.

Learning Mandarin is not going to help.

Most of the damage was done by Prawit blaming the drowning of 50 plus Chinese on them!Chinese social media has basically recommended not to travel to Thailand.

Japan is one of the major beneficiaries and it is unlikely that the Chinese will be back here any time soon.

TAT may eventually realize there are 6 times as many other races than there are Chinese, perhaps they should concentrate there.But the current crackdown on "foreigners" in general is not the bes start.

Seems Chinese recognize a bluff package as what it is better than other members of the "happy family" ...

TAT wants tourists, but everything shows that they don't want us foreigners at all!

Some Chinese just bought the hotel were my wife worked in Chiang Mai they paid between 200 to 300 million for hotel with big plans to make changes. Maybe they know something or they will lose their butts.

This news article sounds too good to be true. Last I checked, Thailand was still swarming with Chinese.

Last month is was served by a Chinese girl in a known restaurant in Chiang Mai.

She did not understand a word Thai or English. 

Did not know they could work freely in Thailand.

Needles to say , i wont be going back to that place any more.

The Japanese must be embarrassed to see how easy it is to invade this country and turn it in a colony.

Walked around Chiang Mai lately? It has a massive glut of hotels even if the Chinese return in force. No one wants to talk about.

 

On the positive side I actually saw some guests leaving one of those three new boutique hotels between the old/new refurbished Hotel M and Kafe on soi 5 moonmuang RD. Two and a half months, sure, but people were sited. WooHoo!

Learn Chinese? Hmmm, after decades of promoting English language learning the country is still struggling with nearly the lowest competency in the region. Still, nothing wrong with a little bit of hopeless optimism I suppose ????

Could it be because Chiang Mai is a bit meh? Wonder if they ever consider that as a possible reason.

Sure everyone in China, all ethnic groups love each other.  They don't.  What a dumb comment.  The Thais were forced out of China.

A pretty low bar when it comes to confidence.  And you wonder why Thailand leaves a bad taste in their mouth.  

 

Dual pricing want away in China two decades ago.  Their immigration does not have a rock star  at the head with media consultants 

Why Chinese tourists have stopped coming to Chiang Mai in one picture.

The hotels and TAT have as much as said that they could care less about farangs.  And as the government keeps 'improving' places like Koh Pahngan and Kaow San Road those from the US, UK, EU, and commonwealth countries are taking the "farang aren't really welcome anymore" hint and choosing to vacation elsewhere. And now Western retirees are being informed that they too are persona non grata.  I'm sure the TAT will roll out some press release with cherry picked statistics to show how rosey tourism is, but Thai business owners know better.  And as far as the Chinese?  Mess with one member of the Borg and the Borg will dry up.  Mess with a farang and no one cares.  Farangs are pretty independent and not even their own governments get involved with Thai on tourist crime.  Mess with Chinese tourists?  The government notices and then the hive reacts.  At some point you'd think that Thailand would stop shooting itself in the foot.  Maybe not! 

My daughter who works in the Hotel industry,says numbers

are definitely down a lot, and the Chinese are now going to,

Japan,lot less rip offs and a lot safer,and I think once they

are gone they won't be returning,and really who can blame

them.

Yes I hear you, but financially two different worlds.

I would suspect a lot of Chinese just can't afford Japan the way they can Thailand.
