Retirement in Sri Lanka

Featured Replies

I was just watching a beautiful YouTube video that popped up in my next video thing ....oh don't ask me what they call it ... algorithm?

Anyway "vagabond away " I think it was , oh who cares but ...it was the interview of an old Aussie guy who went from retired in Cambodia to the beaches of ....SRI LANKA

He was spending only 20% of his Aussie pension per month and having a beautiful life

.

He is living in the south on a beach

Now I'm thinking maybe SRI LANKA is for me !

Anyone lived there ? Would we classify this as part of South EAst Asia ?

I'm so excited

The best advice ever heard on this and others sites, which some won't take, is to rent in a place you're thinking of moving to, for at least 6 months if not a year, so you will see how it is year round. Look at as many reviews as possible, of people saying things you're interested in, then visiting. Any place on earth can be researched in advance. You keep changing ideas weekly, and have been to Pattaya and seen what it is, along with the Philippines. You go where you can enjoy your hobbies, where the food is of your liking, along with the weather.

Here is AI about Sri Lanka, which seems to mirror some links...Economic and Daily Life Challenges

  • Economic Instability: The country has faced severe economic crises, leading to high inflation, currency fluctuations, and shortages of essential goods like fuel and cooking gas.

  • High Import and Vehicle Taxes: Imported items, electronics, and vehicles carry exorbitant import taxes, sometimes exceeding 300%.

  • International Shopping Limits: Direct ordering from major global platforms like Amazon is difficult, and customs clearance involves heavy taxes and bureaucratic hurdles.

Infrastructure and Transport

  • Traffic and Road Conditions: Roads are often narrow, congested, and poorly maintained, making travel times long and unpredictable. Public buses and trains can also be extremely overcrowded.

  • Utilities and Services: Tap water is unsafe to drink, and high-speed internet can be unreliable or scarce outside major urban areas like Colombo.

  • Restricted Land Ownership: Foreign nationals face strict limitations, heavy lease taxes, or outright bans on owning land directly unless making multi-million-dollar investments.

Tourism and Social Concerns

  • Tourist Scams and Overcharging: Visitors frequently encounter inflated pricing at major cultural and historical sites, alongside organized begging rackets or fake attractions.

  • Harassment and Safety for Women: Female travelers and residents often report uncomfortable levels of staring, catcalling, and aggressive attention from some local men.

  • Environmental and Weather Risks: The region is vulnerable to severe monsoons and tropical cyclones that can disrupt travel and damage infrastructure.............https://www.yearofthedurian.com/2013/08/long-term-in-sri-lanka-negatives-trave.html.

No doubt has plenty to appeal, but I recently checked and there is no path to permanent resiidence,

Once again, no matter about items already mention, COL, blah blah blah, remember, you do need a retirement visa.

ALWAYS CHECK THAT FIRST, to avoid wasting your time researching any further. Let me help you out with that ...

I await the next silly retirment location that people haven't researched properly. If not your home country, test out TH for a year. At worst, you'll have a very nice holiday, IF, you actually travel around, and don't sit in that bar all day in Patts.

Stop thinking about residency, as most countries don't offer, or if so, it's not easy or cheap. You ain't going to live that long anyway. With the rent vs don't buy in mentality, does it really matter.
