what is reporting your address to the immigration bureau?

Recommended Posts

I've been hearing about this more and more often, just wondering what the definition encapsulates and if everyone on holiday should be aware?

Apparently by law foreigners must declare their place of stay when in the country, but that's already a question on the form when you're applying for the visa and when you get that little on arrival card in the airport

Is there an extra step people are unaware about? Should everyone be calling their nearest immigration office in panic?

That is not correct. Visitors are required to give their address on the arrival card.

When the foreigner arrives at the address they are staying at someone (owner, house-master, possessor, hotel/guesthouse manager) should report using TM.30 that the foreigner is staying at their address.

In some circumstances the foreigner can be considered responsible for reporting themselves, but that would generally only apply to property owners or tenants.

Those that have been given long term extensions of stay should report any change of address using TM.28 in addition to the TM.30 that should be completed by the owner/etc.

Some offices want those with extensions of stay to report using a TM.30 whenever they return from a trip abroad or in country.

Tourists have no obligation to make any reports, but might not get short term extensions if a TM.30 report hasn’t been filed by the owner/etc.
