Funds required for re-entry.

Featured Replies

If you do a same day border run to Vientiane after staying in Thailand for 90 days and return without a visa are you required to have 20,000 baht in cash on arrival at Don Meung Airport on re-entry?  I am an Aussie who spends a lot of time in Thailand, generally on tourist visas.  Thanks for your advice.

Theoretically yes but they probably won't ask to see it. And if they do ask to see it, having it or not may not influence their final decision.

Make life easier for yourself by buying a bus-fly package, flying to Udon and then getting the airline-provided bus to Laos. It'll be a lot cheaper and the probability of having difficulties re-entering will be much reduced. Be aware that you are only permitted 2 visa exempt land border entries per calendar year.

Entering visa exempt the rule is 10k baht but immigration on entry often want to see the equivalent of 20k baht in cash when they ask to see the required financial proof on entry.

If flying to Vientiane why not get a tourist visa while there?

Trying to stay in the country long term by doing visa exempt entries is not advisable since after doing a few of them you can be pulled to the side and being questioned as to what you are doing here.

If applying for a tourist visa in Vientiane do you have to show proof of having 20,000 baht in cash to re-enter Thailand by plane to Don Meung Airport?  I have heard this is being policed at Don Meung.

They ask for the 20k baht in cash if they pull you aside to be questioned. That normally only happens if you have several entries using a tourist visas or by getting a visa exempt entry.

If you get a tourist visa you could cross the bridge to Nong Khai where they seldom bother people when entering the country. Then fly domestic from Udon Thani to Don Mueang.

Very few people get asked to show any cash.

They only tend to ask long term tourists, especially using visa exemption, and especially if they are looking for reasons to deny entry.

Having a Tourist Visa greatly reduces the chances of being questioned or having to show any cash. But each entry as a tourist increases your chances of getting questioned, or — worst case scenario — denied entry.

Even if you have 10/20K they could still deny entry.

Carry the cash anyway, it is not much only about 560 US.

But the above poster is correct, you can still be denied entry, grab a visa

They want to see 20K, if they bother to ask. Better safe than sorry.
