I use Wise as believe most people do, as a simple 'financial bridge'. I stick GBP in at one end and I get, usually a few seconds later, THB out the other end. That's all I want and that's all I need a

Many Wise members may not have seen that email and other intending users may be interested in moving money before then.

May I just point out something asked on one of the other "Wise" threads that these changes are only for those whose Wise accounts are registered in Thailand.

For those who have accounts registered elsewhere (UK, USA, Europe) for the purpose of sending funds TO Thailand, there are no changes.

What is the advantage for an expat in Thailand if they open a Wise account registered in Thailand? Does it obviate the need to have a Thai bank account and/or an account from their home country?

Quite right, it is presumptuous. I assuming that everyone who have registered using a Thai address will have received the self and same email. And as for the rest, it doesn't make a scrap of difference when they choose to send their hard earned.

Expats in Thailand will still need to have a Thai bank account in order to receive money here. As for their home countries, it depends on what monies they are receiving. In the UK for instance pensions and the likes can be paid directly into a Wise account.

Well, yes and no! For those who are not resident in Thailand and therefor use the home country address, this should hold true.

But there are those who use their home country address, but are actually resident in Thailand this might just make a difference, although it's difficult to guess what that might be. Don't forget that Wise Ltd (Thailand) will have to comply with the Thai financial services rules and we don't know what that might entail.

Best to get ones house in order me thinks.

If the latter scenario (resident in Thailand) and you're sending money from home country bank to Thailand, Wise don't need to know - as the transactions are all online I cannot see what would even make them suspect.

Your presumption is as speculative as is mine. But do not forget that Wise are obliged to comply with NYC rules. Personally, I would prefer to be honest about where I live, just as one should with a bank. That way there can be no comeback.

Yes - despite my earlier comment, I take that stance too. I'm not personally affected, but was just offering up a, as you say, speculative scenario.

Thanks. My UK pension is paid into my UK bank account. My Thai earnings are paid into my Thai bank account. Is there any benefit if I open a Wise account (registered in Thailand)?

Unless you want to send funds out of Thailand, probably not. (Presuming you live off your Thai earnings)

If you have an address in UK it might help to have a UK one, but see the chats between @Moonlover and me immediately above.

You can very easily and cheaply transfer funds from a UK bank account to a Thai bank account using Wise on an ad-hoc basis, and I assume you could transfer funds from a UK Wise account to a Thai bank account equally easily. I've done the former many times but never the latter.

Not my post

WISE is also on X, you can ask questions and get a good reply within minutes.

The delay is “ out of our hands “, meaning the Thai banks haven’t yet agreed for the planned changes.

Hope I am on the right wavelength here!

I'll pick up on that one. We are all coming under ever more scrutiny from banks and the likes.as we know, As we it's due to regulators scrutinizing them! They're on the lookout of course for money launderers, drug smugglers and so forth and what regulators look out for are anomalies.

Having one's 'financial feet' in 2 different countries might just be a red flag to the scrutineers and you could find your account(s) frozen whilst that anomaly is checked out. Which is why I strongly suggest that you should harmonize your data, especially your place of residence, between your various accounts.

Big brother is watching!

Not all Wise account holders have yet received this email. My partner (a Thai national) has not.

What is also confusing is what's happening with the replacement Wise debit card. Holders were supposed to have been contacted by now, but I haven't. However, based upon a recent chat with support, the timetable for replacing the cards hasn't changed, and the current cards will be cancelled by the end of this month.

Sadly true. 🤔I used to have offshore accounts from when I worked overseas, but gradually closed them down as the various nosy bas**rds gained more power 😡

However for the case in point, it would possibly benefit @brewsterbudgen to NOT open a Thai Wise account, which is what I suggested above anyway. If he has a UK bank account and a UK Wise account already, then one assumes he "officially" lives in UK, so best to leave things as they are. Obviously such information is private to him but I suggest he considers both our points and makes a decision.

What do you mean we all know? I didn't know and I have not received any emails from Wise at all. Account still working as normal also using Thai address.

I would be doing some checking if I were you. Wise have been sending emails about these changes for months now so if you haven't received any then something's awry. It's working as normal for now because nothing has changed yet, but wait a couple of months and you might get a shock.

So here's a question... If say, BKK Bank wants 4 forms of ID to maintain an account here, and if Wise is opening/converting to a Thai "chartered office": is it possible to establish a "Thai Wise" account of some type (using it as a bank) and transfer US funds into that account.

I'm not familiar at all with the many Wise financial services, as I use them only as a currency broker for wire transfers. If this is possible, then we may have an alternative to the banking shenanigans going on now.

WHO CAN ANSWER THIS

is this the death of wise for sending euros from your home country to Thailand for the purpose of buying real estate , as the land department needs an FET to show the money came from abroad and converted only in Thailand ... and wise is not forced to bill you twice and everything has to be in THB , converted twice, so the big loser is US and the winners are WISE and BoT, as usual

No you can't. Wise is transfer vehicle, not a bank. You can accumulate funds in your main account (as some do) but to access it in Thailand you must 'transfer' that money into a Thai bank account.

Thai registered accounts now show your total balance in THB, but that is only notional. It is not 'real' THB until you transfer it in.

As far as '4 forms of ID' is concerned, I think you've been listening to too many rumours.

Why should it make any difference? You will still be transferring foreign currency into a Thai bank account. And as I understand it Thai banks still issue FETs for this purpose.

I'm thoroughly confused. I use wise a few time a years to transfer money from my USA banks to Wise (THai address). I just sent $7k to Wise today. Will I still be able to transfer to my Thai bank account?

I think what else Wise might be doing if they weren't facilitating the transfer of money between countries.

It's the reason they exist!

This is how I read the changes:

When the changes take place in September your USD will be converted to THB immediately by Wise and held as THB until you transfer them to your Thai bank.

So the only difference will be that you can't hold your USD with Wise and wait for a better exchange rate.

Thanks! I never try to time exchange rates so it won't impact me. I do use the debit cards often to buy things online and usually the transactions are not in Thai baht. I assume there will be a conversion fee for those transactions.
