Amphur visit our home checking on our sons whereabouts.

We are currently abroad and our kids are reasonably young, they're not of military service age but the amphur staff have advised my sister-in-law that they're having to check out Thai/Farang kids situations and ensure that their parents know they have to enroll for the lottery. They want to know where the children are studying and asked where they'll be living once they grow up. My in-laws advised them that we are back in Thailand in a month or so and will go and have a chat with them then. Given that my eldest is at least 5 years from having to attend and sit the lottery I reckon they're being a little premature. I am aware that there are (legitimate) steps via our local Thai Embassy to advise on sons studying/living abroad, applying for a 'waiver' etc. and given the recent developments and political climate 'back home', my wife will probably not want her kids living there ever again.

Anyone had any similar interest in their sons lately?

How nice ???? are foreigners in Thailand to have kids with a Thai when knowing that they will have to wear a ridiculous uniform and live with idiots during 2 years...

Beyond understanding for me !

Volunteer for the Air Force.  They'll send your kid through boot camp which is a good experience and then will kick him out in a few months.  If he actually wanted to enlist in the AF he'd need to pass a test and then there is a waiting list. A lot of young Thais actually want to enlist in the Air Force.  If he plays the lottery and loses he may eventually be drafted into the Army and then sent to the Deep South or Cambodia to become cannon fodder.  There are ways to mitigate that risk.  That was the course my kid took at his mother's and my suggestion.  Boot camp was good for him.  It polished off the whiny rough edges of childhood.  But then again, I'm a vet so I admit to being biased.
If it becomes necessary for them to have to live in Thailand (their choice for the future) and I don't put in the effort to have them removed from the list, I will have them consider their options. My grandfather, father, brother and myself all served and your suggestions haven't fallen on deaf ears.

If they attend school in Thailand they can do a training program in high school that will allow them to skip the lottery. a friend here in Chiang Mai her son completed his program about one year ago. They have to go out and play army a bit, get a bit dirty but then they are done.

They are not in a Thai school and never have been. All of their schooling will be completed outside Thailand …. Mrs Rasi put her foot down on that one. ???? What you are describing  sounds like the Thai equivalent of the army cadets? Our neighbour who is the 2IC at the local police station had his son attend a similar course years ago but still (allegedly) had to fork out some Baht at a later date to avoid the lottery.

I guess someone is into some preparation work for a nice pay-off.

Whatever you do, ensure they don't waste two years of their life and hence there are financial ways of dealing with the issue.

Assuming that the kids have dual nationalities you might want to check, if they are allowed to serve in the Thai army; in i.e. peaceful Switzerland it is forbidden for Swiss citizen to serve in a foreign army.

If no other option then fly them out and let them return on their foreign passports; they will be granted a one-year visa easily against presentation of house register and birth certificate! After a year you can reverse the exercise, i.e. fly them out as aliens and return them as Thais - so done by an acquaintance of mine.

If 'they' are in preparation, I hope they've not spent their pay-off just yet as there's very little chance any attempt at extortion will get them far. If it does appear that is the case, I'll report back on it in Dec. We are 100% legal and legit..well.... at least this week we are anyway.[emoji16]
My kids are dual with all paperwork/passports etc in order and they're not in Thailand at the moment as we travel between our two homes during the year. Given the military is not yet recruiting 13 and 11year old boys I reckon we are still legal for a while yet.
Years ago I paid heed to the information contained in this forum regarding investment, family and the 'Thai way' so made sure to try and have appropriate options when we chance upon bumps in the road.
Thanks for your input. [emoji106]
