EC making progress in preparations for Senator selection

 

 

BANGKOK, 2nd November 2018 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) has made known that polling zones for the general election will be announced next week and that it will hold a discussion with political parties on November 22, noting that the focus is now on the selection of Senators due to the use of a new system. 

EC commissioner Santad Siriananpaibul led a meeting to clarify the Snator selection process and a rehearsal among EC office directors from across the nation. The meeting was to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process and precedes the declaration of the Senator Selection Decree on November 16. The EC is to meet after the decree is announced to plan registration for the Senate between November 26 and 30. 

EC Secretary-General Pol Col Jarungwit Phumma revealed that the commission has called a meeting with political parties on November 22 to prepare them for the general election. Emphasis will be placed on parties carrying out primary votes and the EC will also hear views on the Electronic Campaigning Act that it recently revised. 

On news the prime minister has called a meeting between the National Council for Peace and Order, Government and EC, Pol Col Jarungwit confirmed he was told of such a meeting but no coordination has yet taken place. 

The secretary-general refrained from giving an update on the division of polling zones but said an announcement will likely be made next week. He said the EC has acknowledged a fourth approach to zoning proposed by several provinces but is making its decision based on an equal division of citizens.

Isn’t the senate chosen by the Junta and them alone? 

Criteria.

Must be quite old and wearing a military uniform to qualify.

Not exactly but the final result is about the same.

I believe (not to take any time to review notes on what is basically going to be a pro-military organization) the junta appoints the various sector selection chairmen and committee members who will review applicants and make the appointments with exception of the six ex-officio Senate seats chosen directly by the NCPO.
