The Samut Sakhon provincial administration will hold the annual mackerel dishes fair from November 17 to 22 to boost tourism, the provincial governor said.

Samut Sakhon Governor Somkid Chanthomthok said the 11th annual fair to boost the sale of mackerels caught by local fishermen would be held from 10am to 8pm on the check dam along the Wat Chong Lom beach, and on the historic Tambon Tha Chalom road in Muang district.

During the festival, tourists can buy freshly caught mackerels from the Gulf of Thailand and sold by the mackerel fishermen’s club of Samut Sakhon.

Several dishes will also be made from mackerels for tourists to savour, including a bowl of boiled rice with mackerel that will sell for only Bt20, the governor added.

Local vendors will also sell many OTOP products during the fair.

It appears that "Thai" mackerel is definitely the "real" thing:

Scombrini, the true mackerels

Short mackerel

Pla thu (Thai: ปลาทู; RTGS: pla thu) is a very important fish in Thai cuisine, where it is sold in the market with the head bent downwards, which gives it a characteristic shape.
