Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wants more tunnels and flyovers be built to ease traffic congestions in Bangkok, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said.

Arkhom said Prayut was impressed that the new Ratchayothin underpass had reduced congestion on Ratchadapisek Road at the Ratchayothin Intersection.

The tunnel project was completed in 21 months, three months ahead of schedule, and used just Bt1.2 billion of the Bt1.5 billion budgeted for construction. Prayut now wants to use it as a role model for similar projects in other areas of the capital.

The tunnel was opened to traffic on Monday, allowing traffic to flow through at about 80 kilometres per hour, Arkhom added.

Impressed with the results, the prime minister has ordered the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to study traffic-congested areas where flyovers or tunnels could be built and report back within one month.

Travelling towards Central Lard Prao from Kaset on Pahon Yothin Road (and Central Lard Prao to Kaset) it's made no difference for me so far. Traffic still sucks the same as before.

But to be fair, there could be teething problems. Just have to wait and see.

Perhaps they should invite the Japanese team who designed and built the bridge over Rama 4, Sathorn Road, Wireless Road intersection.  They impressed everybody; design completed and approved, built and opened in a very short time, which many others though would be totally impossible and all done for a tiny budget.

I may well be wrong but I thought this bridge was imported and erected by Belgians.

Given a big enough budget and a long enough time frame and the builders and governments will be taking boughs and sighting the line, "On time and under budget" Let's get that next "trough" approved.

Looking at that photo he's having a bad hair day .. And won't that 3 fingers gesture stuff get you into trouble abit ..

As for the idea of more tunnels and overpasses why not get Gran Turismo track designers to knock up a Bangkok circuit as they love a tunnel and overpass in those games ..

The lavender man speaks. So long as Bangkok is doing well that is all that matters. That's where his friends live.

So long as he can keep the flood waters out of the tunnels where where the VIP wives shopping convoys go it will be OK. Outer suburbs might get a bit wet but who cares.
