BANGKOK, 10th November 2018 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has endorsed the amendment of the Narcotics Act, B.E. 2552, and handed it over to the administration for consideration.

The weekly NLA sitting gave a greenlight to the amended version of the 2009 Narcotics Act proposed by NLA member Somchai Sawaengkarn and 43 other lawmakers, and agreed to forward it to the cabinet for a 30-day review.

Accepting the amended act, Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said the new law would legalize the production of five narcotic drugs including marijuana and Kratom or Mitragyna speciose, adding that these five drugs will be used in the medical industry and only under the supervision of Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Public Health Ministry.

The minister said the government will study the bill over the next 30 days, making adjustments as required before handing it back to the Assembly.
