Police in Pattaya have arrested two men who fleeced a group of Chinese tourists of 4,000 baht.

On Friday, the tourists had made a complaint to police after the men had demanded they pay fines for dropping litter near Bali Hai pier.

The tourists handed over 4,000 baht to the men, but it was only when they were leaving the area they spotted signs that revealed the fine for littering is 2,000 baht.

Realising they had been the victims of a scam, the tourists reported the matter to police.

Police managed to track down the men after studying CCTV footage.

They initially denied any involvement, despite being identified by the Chinese tourists.

It wasn’t until police showed the CCTV footage they confessed.

The PR Pattaya Facebook page said the men, who were wearing uniforms at the time of the incident, work for City Hall but are employed via a third party.

The pair have been dismissed and face fines of up to 20,000 baht and/or one year in jail.

Typically, the fine for littering in Thailand is 2,000 baht, which should be paid at a police station. Offenders should also be given a receipt, which wasn’t the case in this incident with the Chinese tourists.

  • You can see the police faces quite clearly. The photo-op is for them, not the criminals.

  • so what is the point of the photo op if we can't see their faces ?

  • The same as when you park your car on the side of the road, you get complimented. I had one last week. Someone left me a note, it said "Parking Fine", so that was nice.

Serves them right.now go plant rice as you've lost your job.if they had charged them 2,000b they might of got away with it but the old Thai affliction of greed got the better of them.probably done it before and started upping the stakes.

It is to point out whose toes you are treading on if you try to get money from littering tourists.

Work for City Hall ?

Will they now work for City Hall ?

"The tourists" means more than 1, right? If more than one littering, each should be fined the 2k (if that is the law).

No one should try to cut into BIB gravy train. They'll be on you like flies on dog poo.

"Typically, the fine for littering in Thailand is 2,000 baht, which should be paid at a police station. Offenders should also be given a receipt, which wasn’t the case in this incident with the Chinese tourists."

Always like a good chuckle on Sundays...

The Chinese did litter and deserved the fine. It's just the wrong people collected. Kind of like a citizens arrest, a citizens fine. 555

Probably an inactive post in City Hall, sitting around all day - like the rest of them.

Did you not read the report?  --'they have now been dismissed'.

so the Chinese get there money back and don't have to pay fine

Thailand are just scared to face the fact Chinese are littering all the street

Just another pointing photo

No Fines for LitterBug Thai's at Mikes Mall. 4 thais left 4 beer bottles  and food trash.. Beach Trash..and wheres the cops Oh  out taking Pictures.....

So good to see we are looking after our number #1 tourists.

Even if they do drop litter.

And sometimes defacate in the street and the back of taxis.

Let them loose i say,  they are doing the community a favour.

Sounds like a note to the Chinese: "Do whatever you like here in Thailand cause really, this is your country"

Second, the Thai police are amazing. Everyrime I read an article, they always get the perpetrators to confess

Is this photo shown for the purpose of which police are involved to gain credit or showing the culprit but faces unidentifiable? Stupid!

I like the idea of fining tourists who litter , but not the uniformed guys pretending to be the good guys when they are clearly scammers.

But Lt/Gen Big Joke was not there, so why did they need a Photo-op

Oh wait! There might have been a Lt/Col there, or maybe a Maj/Gen.:cheesy:

every Thai is greedy? Stats please.... or is just another dull TVF generalization?

WELL, I do hope the police fined the Chinese litter bugs also.

Going to another country for holiday and litter ☹️. They should be fined 10.000 Baht!

Yes, I know, Thais do litter (much more than should), but the point is that if you are on holiday you are a guest of a country and should never litter.

In general the fine for littering should be 10k Baht, BUT, the Thais should take action to provide sufficient bins to be honest.

i have different theory about how this went down.......
