Outraged netizens blast man for traveling round Thailand for free!

A Thai man went on Facebook to boast about how he was traveling around Thailand for free.

Not content with sleeping on trains and in temples he had the gall to go to a hotel in Lampang that has rooms for 1,600 baht a night.

He appealed to the owner saying he was from Bangkok and had no money. He was fed up with roughing it so could he stay a night for nothing in one of the air-con rooms with comfy bed.

In return he promised a review of the hotel.

The owner agreed.

But netizens laid into the cheapskate saying this was not the done thing in Thailand.

The fan page has since been removed, said Sanook

  • Why attack the man for getting a free room? He didnt cheat/rob or any other nasty thing, just asked and got. Hotel owner fell for a sob story, thats all.

  • As long as he's not hurting anyone, who's business is it anyway.

  • Ah, it's been a while since the snowflake netizens had their outrage break, glad they found something to fill their miserable lives with.

Will cost the owner to decontaminate the room after that hobo slept there.

I assume the room has free soap and shower facilities.

Reviews of Hotels or Restaurants can be a very useful thing for the business owner if positive and harmful if negative.

So if you have a restaurant and a guest asks you for a free Hamburger, because he is hungry and in return he offers a positive review on google, tripadvisior etc., don`t you think it is likely that you will receive a negative review from the same person, if you decline his offer?

So in my opinion it is almost blackmailing.

colinneil

It honors you to regard this way of thinking as sad. But unfortunately it is the sad reality. Almost everyone who earns his money online has already experienced it.

Ebay for example has clear rules regarding feedback extortion.

"Buyers can't use the threat of negative (or promise of positive) feedback to get a seller to provide goods or services that weren't included in the original item's description or purchase price. "

Unfortunelately this rule applies only to buyers who are stupid enough to phrase the request very clearly.
If a buyer is smart, he tells you what he wants or expects in a convoluted message.

And in most cases it is cheaper to fulfil the wish of the "buyer", as a couple of negative feedback can cost easily 30-40% turnover for the next couple of month.

My friend has a guest house here in Chiang Mai, he recieved a negative review from a guest complaining there was no parking for cars. The real problem was they didn't have a car. I guess should have offered a free room to get a positive review

  • Popular Post

The inference of the headline is that the man was somehow cheating Thais...

Anyone spot the irony?

I know, it's outrageous. But cheating foreigners is just considered "doing business".

I think the guest was expecting a free car?  Perhaps with a driver?

Why??

Sadly...it's symptom. I'll stop there.

I am outraged that netizens get outraged by outrageous events!

I think he personally has shown amazing economic sustainability. A very atypical and creative response to the usual consumerist nonsense that suggest the most expensive way of doing things is the best.

I wonder how many of those outraged netizens are up to their neck in debt?  That would be a far more worthy topic for their outrage and energy.

Apparently it's the world's business as he went on FaceBook to brag about it. Had he kept his mouth shut. as he should have, it would have been done and dusted.

Ah! Those outraged Netziens. Yes indeed. All of one of them causing a national stir that is so newsworthy. Sheesh!

He will blamed for learning bad habits from farang backpackers who stopped the roadside cars for a free ride!

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a Facebook fan page? Do fan pages popup like an unwanted advert blocking whatever it is that your're viewing, or do you the user have to click to enter them?

If people have chosen to click on his fan page and read, that's up to them. I saw a Facebook fan page on the sidebar of my page for a popular guitar teacher - would it be appropriate if I clicked on it and told the owner, "I don't ******* want guitar lessons!"? Wouldn't it be simpler to not click on something I didn't like or simply block it after the fact?

Rubbish! "... this was not the done thing in Thailand" is pure high-horsed bullshit from those in the holier-than-thou brigade. Such practices ABOUND, especially amongst so-called 'bloggers', some of whom can't write to save their lives. Most of them spend their lives hustling everything from free stays to free food, drinks, travel and so on. In my line of work, I have to deal with these nitwits regularly. And come the Motor Expo next week, there will be more of them masquerading as 'journalists' and promising coverage etc. just for the sake of getting free goodie bags from as many booths as possible. Most of the time, their web addresses lead to nothing, or some poorly-executed sites at best. The cleverer ones will claim to be from, or are affiliated with, reputable news outlets. It's a bloody minefield.

What is a booth?

I’ve previously made comments on the likes of TripAdvisor about places I’ve stayed at / eaten at / or visited about the lack of parking facilities or not being wheelchair friendly even though I wasn’t driving or in a wheelchair. It’s good practice for customers and the owners get a chance to respond.

The fact that he put it where all the world can see it, gives everyone the right to make comments.  I don't agree with them, but.....

Outraged Netizens :cheesy:

Doesn't take much.

And are they "Outraged" by 20,000 road deaths a year ?

People can make all the comments they want. That's their right. The point was that he's not hurting anyone. And if you're not hurting anyone, go nuts and do whatever makes you happy. Even if the whole world can see. The only reason I can see for the netizens being upset is that their egos have been hurt.

My advice to people who get offended easily - don’t click on things you might not like. You have a choice.

How would he know they did not have a car if here was no parking for car?

So how did he go in Pattaya and what line did he use?

I'm a former senior editor (travel writer) for a newspaper with 14 mio. readers and visited more than 100 countries in this position. Almost everywhere you will find couples of parasites travelling the world for free in change for very questionable "reviews" on travel portals, and their own websites with meager traffic, financed by ads.          However, regarding the outraged netizens - its pure Thai envy.
