Hi everyone,

i recently invited a friend of mine to work at my office. He previously was staying in Thailand on an education visa (studying master degree). On the day his student visa expired, he left to Laos to apply for a business visa which he used to get his work permit at the labor department in Bangkok. Afterwards, he visited the immigration office in Chang wattana to extend the 90 day business visa but they told him that he needs to cancel his education visa first what he was surprised about. The real issue is that, on his transcript it says the date of graduation is more than 90 days before the education visa expired but he honestly still had assignments to submit and hasn’t even received his degree yet. I told him that this won’t be a problem since the school told him that there is no need to cancel the visa and that he can just leave on the expiration date, exactly as he did. The question now is, will he have any issues when showing up with the transcript and is there anything I can do to help him?

hi.

as far as i understand: at the moment your friend has a not extended NON-B visa right? but he cannot extend it because he needs to cancel his ED visa first.

well if his ED visa already expired.... and he left the country... he shouldnt have ED visa anymore if im not mistaken. Plus he got his non-o from laos already as you said. So all old visas canceled auto. There must be something else

What did they suggest him at the immigration?

Immigration apparently want his extension of stay (not a visa) based upon attending a University formally canceled. His leaving the country made it invalid.

If possible he should get a letter from the University stating his last day of study was the date he left the country so that immigration can cancel his extension.

This is correct.. I did a land border Hop when my ED visa had expired.. They said i needed a letter from the school to say it is ended..

Yes, that is exactly what happened, the issue is that I worry he would be on an overstay since he graduated 5 months before the visa expired which would be stated on the letter from the university.

He needs to talk to the university about it. It should not that big a deal for them to write a letter stating what his last day was the date he left the country since they told him he could stay until then. It is just a formality for immigration.

I was thinking that too but he told me that they asked for a transcript and the letter which the university doesn’t wanna issue for the date he left. They insist that they write the same date as on the transcript. So I am a bit worried if he will possibly get banned if he shows up with those 2 documents.
