Vince, if somebody wants to respond, they can post here on this topic, or send you a PM (private message).

I'm no expert, but I suggest you 'buy' a real visa at a Thai consulate in the USA before you leave; try to get a 60 day tourist visa. That should be easy. If you arrive with only a passport, you'll only get a 30 stamp which is not a visa, and have to make a visa run.

save you time (any kind of visa run here is going

to take a day out of your holiday) and money

(a really fun minibus ride to Cambodia will cost

you 60$ and flying to KL more).
