There's quite a lot of doubting Thomases out there, perhaps foreigners should come to Thailand and learn how to create a high-speed railway.

No?

I'm not sure about that, maybe we should have a meeting to think about it. How much will you be paying the participants?

who talks about "pay the loan back to the Chinese"?

lesson no. 1 of Thai economics: A loan is to be regarded a present with an option to show (financial) thankfulness from time to time

If they don't pay the loan back the Chinese will take over the assets like they have done in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Not as much as a Thai would, but then I'd only pay them what they're worth. About the same as the square root of sod all seems about right. I seriously hope I never see the day when a Thai makes an important decision.

And like they'll do in Africa. The strategy of the Chinese is there for all to see, even that yobbo Mike Pence has referred to that. Rightly. He may be hopeless but he's not completely stupid. He'll always defer to his boss in that contest.

I could even go out on a limb and inquire in a very pure and basic form?

Why do we need a high-speed trains here?

What's the real practical and commonplace benefit?

There isn't one. It's just a marker for China.
