UDON THANI — Travelers to Udon Thani City may be forgiven for momentarily thinking they’ve stepped out of Isaan and into the beating commercial heart of Tokyo.

 

A new pedestrian crosswalk near the provincial center’s train station was completed today featuring a large diagonal zebra crossing, and it didn’t take long for comparisons to Tokyo’s bustling Shibuya Crossing to start rolling in.

With the best will in the world is that not gonna confuse the **** outta them when they don't even stop for a single one on a straight road .. And is that the flag of Guyana they are trying to paint in the foreground 'cos if it is they need to go an' have a look at a real one ..

All they need now is one of those big signs next to it you get at construction sites saying “It has been X days since our last accident” though make it digital and in seconds so it can be updated quickly.

I drove through the intersection this morning and it was totally confusing. They took the turn lanes and made them into standing areas for pedestrians while they wait for their turn to cross, so now the traffic is a total clusterf**k. All the different colors, concrete flower pots and stripes on the road make ones eyeballs go in circles. I can guarantee you that traffic will not stop and pedestrians will soon learn not to trust the crossings. This is a total waste of effort and money and no one will profit except the official whose idea it was, and I'm sure he got his fair share in the back pocket. This will go the same way as the bicycle rental program and the bicycle path program which are both huge failures.
