Non-o with reentry permit left Thailand with less that 6 months on passport. Can I return?

Featured Replies

My passport (and non-o visa) expire in 5 months. I'm in Australia for a week. I have a reentry Visa so don't need a tourist visa. Will I be able enter thailand?

The airline might not be happy about you traveling with a passport with only five months left, but immigration will stamp you in for the remainder of your current authorised stay using the re-entry permit, OR the expiry date of the passport if that is earlier.

I thought the passport had to be valid for the length of your planned stay, so 2 months left on your permission to stay = ok,  7 months on permission to stay = not ok

but looking on line all links are saying the passport had to be valid for 6 months past the planned departure date,

You will find that incorrect general info on many websites. People from some countries must have 6 months of passport validity. But most people from countries such as Australia that qualify for a visa exempt entry only need a passport valid for their length of stay.

The problem that can occur though is that some low cost carriers state a passport must be valid for 6 months to board a flight in their terms and conditions.

How long until you wish to enter Thailand? Why not just get a new passport. Of course carry old one with you to show your stamps. Your going to need new one shorty. The problem you could have is the airline. They have very strict rules. Many years ago at the boarding gate the attendant point out I only had 7 months left. I was flying x bkk to saigon. (Yes i realize your flying into thailand not out). I said thankyou and boarded. Point is I fly each month to Vietnam. Every 3 months I obtain new multiple 3 month visa. I am also Australian.  I had the impression that regardless of having Vietnam visa letter, to obtain visa on arrival, the airline was going to insist upon 6 month validity.

Every country has their own rules. Vietnam wants 6 months passport validity but for those from certain countries Thailand only requires a passport valid for their length of stay.
