Tesco Lotus dilemma

Went to the superstore in Chalong, but no trolleys to be seen anywhere, so I took 2 baskets and did my shopping. I got to the cashier and saw no plastic bags on offer. So I looked for the replacement paper bags they announced would be offered in stead. There were none of course, and the staff had no idea. There were also no permanent shopping bags for sale at the cashier, because of course as logic would have it, they were to be found inside the store. I took three light items out and just dumped the rest. My investment was 160 Bht, the items I left behind about 800 Bht, and they can put everything back themselves. All people with more than a few items went trolley hunting, resulting in delays at the check out, but to no avail as these trolleys were all sitting in the parking lot in the rain. Ek Chai/Lotus have really shot themselves in the foot, their concept is to sell a lot, but this limits their ability to do so. There were many nasty remarks by customers. As for me, I can buy all these things within 3 minutes walking from my home, and shan't be going anywhere these stores anymore.  I do support the doing away with of single use plastics, and I thought the recyclable paper bags were a good idea, back to the past as it were.

Are you serious? TL has bags again?

I went to Big C yesterday, tried to buy many items, went to the cashier. I gave cashier the money, then she says no bags. I say, no buy, give money back. Money is returned and leave everything for cashier.

There was no advanced notices posted at the store. No bags for sale at the cashier.

In my opinion, no bags is a ridiculous policy.

"No plastic bags" was one day only.

Paper bags or charging for plastic is the way forwards.

We do most of our shopping in Makro who don't give bags anyway. Once you get used to it and are prepared there's no issue. We have an esky and a lidded plastic box in the back of the truck. Buy, load up, drive home. Only slightly slower than using loads of bags.

Yea....Lotus does this once a month or so.  4 Dec was a no plastic bag day.    I've run into the same no plastic day thing at Big C occassionally....always a one day thing.

The Thai govt is driving all big retailers to try to cut plastic bag usage.  But let's not worry about durn near all the grocery products sold come in plastic packaging.  Buy vegetables/fruit and they put them in clear plastic bags.  Etc....etc....etc.

it was just tescos and 7/11 that got involved in the plastic bag moratorium...went to get my usual vodka and ice today at the corner shop and someone pulled out a plastic bag outta habit...I waved it away and stuffed the goods down me backpack like I usually do...ate some seaweed crisps and shuffled off down the road...

a lotta folks expect the bags as part of what ye pay for and not having any will take a lot of getting used to for both check out staff and customers...constructive forethought ain't sumpin' that the locals are used to...probably need armed thugs in riot gear to get the message across...

'hey, man...didn't I see youse down at my immigration office?'

Jeez, stop your moaning!!!  No plastic bags every day (not just once a month), is a great idea for the environment.

I too was unaware of the no-plastic-bag day, (having just returned from Myanmar).  I too got 'caught out' at the cashier.  Did I leave my shopping at the cashier's till and walk out in a rage?  No!!!  I told the cashier to wait a minute and I went and added a cloth shopping bag to my trolley.  Problem solved.

It's quite unfortunate that Lotus is the only place to shop.....

Yep that's the way to solve it! It will only take people a week or so to adapt, the key though is that we don't keep buying hundreds of re-usable bags. Got to remember to bring them with you to the store! Lots of things one can criticize, but trying to reduce the out of control plastic obsession in Thailand is surely not one of them.

same in the UK, just gotta remember to take a bag for life, i forget when i go back but soon start to remember
