Hi folks... .  I'm wondering if people can get the Non-Immigrant Visa Category "O-A" for Temporary Residents while in Thailand.  I had an O-A visa back in 2013... which of course is expired now in an expired passport...

I have a new passport.   I'm Canadian... and if I cross into Thailand from Cambodia at Poipet, or fly in and land at an airport and get a tourist visa on arrival, can I later get this changed to an O-A Visa while still in Thailand ?     I qualify for the Visa with income level, police background check and the necessary medical check.

  Thank you for any answers...

You cannot get a non 'O-A' visa in Thailand, and have never been able to.

If you enter as a tourist it is possible to apply for a non 'O' visa in the country, followed by a 1 year extension of stay. If you're over 50 you would need 800K in a This bank for 60 days before applying for the extension; or an income (certified by your embassy) of 65K pm; or a combination of the two. No police checks or medical are required.

Non 'O-A' visas are only available from Embassies outside of Thailand to residents of the country they are applying in.

Only in your own country.

PS.

Don't even think about Poipet.

Thank you ....  but what's wrong with Poipet?  I crossed through there in August, 2017 while traveling from Siem Reap to Bangkok.  Took the Giant Ibis bus from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Bangkok.... We got off just before the border.. .walked across and went through Thai Immigration and then got back on our bus....  No problem except for the two hours waiting in line to finally get to see a Thai immigration officer..

What's wrong with Poipet besides the waiting in line ?

Been many reports that it can be a difficult crossing to use now.

Search on Thaivisa under Poipet.

Thank you....  that's how I got the O-A in 2013.  At the Royal Thai Embassy in my country of Canada.  I just wasn't sure if I could get it in Thailand also if I enter from Cambodia.   So I guess I have a couple of decisions to make..

      Thanks again..

There is no problem entering via Poipet. It is generally only a problem for people in Thailand that are trying to do border hops to continue their stay in Thailand.

Okay... thanks... . I'll have to search and then keep that in mind.   Perhaps if I have to do that same trip again... I'll fly from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh to Bangkok or Chiang Mai instead of Buses..

    Wonder why it is difficult now ?  ..... . . I'll search...

But I enjoyed the Giant Ibis bus trip....  they were very friendly and even gave us little meals and bottles of water and helped us at the border.  Great service...get to see some of the countryside,  and much cheaper than flying..even if it does take longer...

Visas are only obtained outside of Thailand at Embassies or consulates. Some types of Visa are particularly restricted to the country of your residence or Nationality. The O-A is one.
