Two people were killed and six others seriously injured when the Toyota Avanza seven-seat MPV they were travelling in collided with a wheeled cargo container, which had dislodged from a 28-wheel truck heading in the opposite direction, and then crashed into a roadside tree in Loei on Monday morning.

Police and rescue workers rushed at 8am to the scene at a around 8am, a curve of Ban Siew on Loei-Phu Rua Road in Tambon Siew of Muang district.

They found the wrecked MPV against the tree, while the 28-wheel truck was near its dislodged cargo container.

Two of the MPV passengers – Anchalee Limwilaikul and Rewadi Limwilaikul  – died from their injuries after being rushed to hospital. The six seriously injured persons were identified as Watchara Ajarnsut, Yadthip Ajarnsut, Nipa Limwilaikul, Nittaya Limwilaikul, Manee Limwilaikul and Thanthip Limwilaikul.

All are Bangkok residents who were reportedly heading home from a holiday trip in Chiang Khan district.

Truck driver Atthapong Pimphetch, 32, who waited at the scene to surrender to police, said he was driving from Phu Rua district towards Muang district. When he reached the Ban Siew curve, the wheeled cargo container dislodged and crashed onto the oncoming MPV, he told police.

How horrible. Innocent travellers, caught in a fatal accident likely caused by the truck driver taking the curve at too high a speed. But at least he stayed at the scene. No matter how carefully you think that you drive the unexpected can get you.

I don't understand the configuration of the truck. Judging from the photograph it was a semi-trailer (articulated lorry). The shipping container is shown secured to the trailer which is on its side having unlocked from the tractor unit.

Translated: He took the curve too fast and jack-knifed the trailer into oncoming traffic.  Par for the course aggressive Thai driving kills again.

You beat me to it:  When he reached the Ban Siew curve, the wheeled cargo container dislodged and crashed onto the oncoming MPV, he told police.

I read this as "I was going too fast when I hit the curve in the road the Container flew off the bed of my truck."

Hmmm  -  a 28 wheeled truck??  I have seen hundreds of 18 wheelers in the US but never a 28 wheeler..........typo??

RIP to the unfortunate folks that are victims of his stupidity.

Probably a typo, but there is a 28-wheeler out there and certainly is NOT on any Thai roads:

R.I.P. the victims - wrong place, wrong time (on a Thai road, anytime).

Take another "good" look at the first photo....
the container is still firmly attached to the trailer which is on it's side !!!

The trailer broke away from the tractor unit !!!

Well I stand corrected, the whole damned thing separated from the Tractor, so did it jack knife, break off, or just come loose...........I still maintain he was pbly going too fast.
