‘Extremely Drunk’ Monks Living In Bus Station Busted For Harassment

Phra Wittaya Pholyano and Phra Supphachok Katadharmo on Thursday after being forced to leave the monkhood.

 

BANGKOK — Two heavily intoxicated monks were arrested Thursday after causing a disturbance at a major Bangkok bus terminal.

 

Police said Phra Wittaya Pholyano, 45, and Phra Supphachok Katadharmo, 38, were ordered to leave the monkhood today after a security guard found them drunk and making a scene at the Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal.

Thai Buddhism has only the most tenuous link to true Buddhism. It probably stretches no further than orange robes and temple buildings. Those temples are little more than a business enterprise (you have to pay for any services the monks offer) often worth many millions of baht, which is strange when you consider that monks are not supposed to handle money.

In the Buddha's day, there wasn't any temples per se, although some of his more affluent followers built several places for the monks to stay over the monsoon periods.  And except for those rainy times, all the monks traveled from place to place carrying what they owned on their backs.  I doubt they ever had a nickel in their pocket.
