Now even 20 baht notes are being counterfeited

Sanook reported on a convenience store in southern Thailand that received an obvious counterfeit banknote. 

 

But this one was not a 1,000 baht as in several recent cases but a lowly 20 baht note worth less than a dollar. 

 

Kotchanit Petchsringam, 33, said she had been open for business for three years and this was the second time she had received a dud. 

 

However, she did not want to press charges as the man who tried to pass off the 20 baht note was a homeless man in the area who lived off handouts. 

 

He was not the full ticket and was unaware that the note was a fake. 

 

The note had been photocopied and casually struck together.

By the description of the guy who passed the note it sounds more like some sick idiot trying to play a joke on the old guy rather than an organised counterfeit gang with a mastermind behind it.

Two of those 20 Baht notes are almost worth £1.................

It's about time they minted a 20 baht coin. Paper ones get "tatty" quickly. 

this isnt counterfeiting in that sense the title suggest,

more likely the category of a prank, some school kids adventure with the printer,

or it is another "not full ticket" guy or gal, who isnt in the loop that color time+ink+paper+risk of being caught not worth the 20thb.

Much prefer a plastic note than another coin to jangle around in my pocket! 

well the Thai 1,000 baht note is made in Australia,wonder why Thailand has not moved to the plastic type note the Aussie's use.

Probably because if plastic was used, they'd be thrown away and end up littering the ocean.

That shouldn't stop Big Joke taking advantage of any publicity that could be gained. A five metre PLASTIC billboard showing arrows pointing to a photo of the hapless man and a life size image of Action Man himself. And then a media stage show with lights and cameras and BJ and his 20 man crime buster team..... plus his new pretty. Just the normal routine.

Vietnamese 50,000 dong plastic notes can get you. When new they stick together so it becomes normal to crease them a bit so they stay apart.

Has worked against me and for me a couple of times in the past.

I have a feeling all cash money is a counterfeit of actual benefit for trade. Switching from bartering to a paper money system has led to the massive divide of wealth and destruction of human dignity. 

So it is.

It was tried. A polymer plastic 50 baht note was issued in 1997 (along with an otherwise identical paper one) and finally withdrawn some seven years ago. While obviously exceedingly more durable than the paper one, I don't think it felt quite right. I never saved any and was glad to see it go.

I have heard rumors of counterfeit Baht notes (100, 500, 1000, and now 20) with the face of the new king on it. As I cannot tell the difference in between counterfeit (เงิน ปลอม) and genuine notes, I always ask for the old King Bhumibol notes and avoid the new ones. Sometimes this is misunderstood and I receive a smile over the counter.

I remember the plastic (polymer) 50 baht.

 

on a proprietor's reaction to suspicion of a possible counterfeit...

 

now firstly, we know the Thai polymers are manufactured at OZ Royal Aust Mint

 

on the other side...

recently did a stack of money changing, in the SCB at the counter:

 -  a stack of Aust $50 notes, in this case 

 

The 50s were a mix of the newest and the more common elder version of the polymer

 

when the banker. flicking thru the notes, came upon the new one

did a backflip to go thru again and was disturbed there were 2 versions, slightly differennt in sizing, and of course different images i the prints

The new ones have a stack more laser security etc etc

 

ended up that even though the elder ones were so commonly passed thru their hands by any other previous customers... they now refused to take the elder notes!

we only achieved 30% of your presented notes being exchanged for Baht

 

Point of this, is whenever presenting notes, only do a batch of the same vintage at any one time... for then there are no 'differences' for them to stumble over, for thinking makes headache...
 

oh yeah, be careful of folded polymers, as they do crack and split into two very easily

( I now always roll them with elastic band - and it 's fun seeing the disturbed faces of the dealer, frustratingly trying to unroll them)

So what if it's only a "lowly" 20 baht note? Offload enough of them it starts to add up. Take care of the pennies....

Why not lets see the poorer people show their creative side as well as the high rollers.  ????

Thailand rejected plastic notes over a decade ago. The reason was that they were difficult to fold and in Thai culture, notes are carried folded in the top pocket of the shirt. I kid you not.
