Thai Govt launches campaign to regain Chinese visitors’ confidence

BANGKOK, 17th December (NNT) - Minister of Tourism and Sports Weerasak Kowsurat said this weekend that Thailand has initiated a number of measures to better balance, manage, and distribute visitor numbers and preserve the quality of tourism destinations in Thailand. In this regard, three measures are being taken.

According to the minister, the top priority is the safety and security of visitors in the aftermath of the July 2018 boat accident in Phuket. In order to rebuild the number of Chinese visitors, he added, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has advocated fixing the underlying problem and communicating it strongly to the Chinese market. This means first restoring the confidence of the Chinese tourists.

The second priority involves environmental protection. The Thai government and business operators in the tourism sector are working together in three areas including 1) banning smoking on public beaches, 2) disallowing plastic bags or foam containers in national parks, and 3) encouraging tourists to use degradable or reusable containers while traveling in national parks.

The third priority is facilitation and connectivity, especially for secondary cities. The 55 secondary destinations being promoted nationwide have also been classified into different categories, such as those that receive more than six million tourists and those with fewer than six million tourists.

I am sorry Thailand, but words do not mean anything. Action of enforcing safety with proper license, training, & safety inspections will only have substance/ not a glitzy campaign of empty smiling words. (btw, what actions have you taken to improve your high fatality rate on your streets & highways???)

Bring back the zero dollar tours, after all its all about quantity not quality,

seems like the Chinese are now flocking to Vietnam.

Quite correct. I have heard on good authority from within the Thai tourism industry that the drop in Chinese numbers is mostly due to the big clean up of zero dollar tourists by Thai authorities. But somehow they can't bring themselves to admit the truth. Of course the tragic sinking of the ship has had affect also on the numbers. They have inflicted this damage on themselves and it serves them right.

But now the bad reputation of Thailand among Chinese travel agents is forcing them to send their clients to safer countries. They are not wanting to damage their own credibility so why would they send them to a destination where there is half a chance of being killed or injured or ripped off. Japan, Vietnam, Laos, Taiwan and South Korea and Europe are now their preferred optional destinations.

Casino's...

Good suggestion. Vietnam has thought of that and are currently working on a promotion to bring Thai/Chinese tourists on short time holidays to Hai Phong, which has casinos, combined with a boat trip on Halong Bay and other nearby tourist destinations. This has been made possible by the planned introduction of cheap direct flights between Bangkok and Hai Phong.

That might put a dent in their own domestic tourism numbers and spending.

Despite the Minister's smarmy smile things are not looking so rosy for Thailand's tourism industry. Other countries are taking advantage of Thailand's failings; of which there are plenty.

'banning smoking on public beaches'

The Chinese are amongst the heaviest smokers in the world so ditch this.

Wrong

The government can say, try, initiate all that it wants.

While the man/women on the street will carry-on regardless in the same old way.

They killed a high number of Chinese in the usual fashion through sheer neglect of personal safety over that of profit, but instead of  a wai doing the trick they've been shown it doesn't work all the time !!

Time for some serious attitude changes by the Thai people... and good luck with that one !!
