Bit late I guess. A friend who runs a large Western tourist oriented business successful for 15 years with a bunch of branch offices in all tourist hotspots tells me of steady decline and accelerating last 24 months. He reckons to have to close down all operations within next 24 months unless the tide turns... Similar stories from many businesses... MS>

The tourists of the world care not one iota what the biggest joke says or does, and what kind of dog and pony show his department comes up with. Means nothing to anyone. The fact of the matter is, nearly everyone I speak to, whether in Phuket, Samui or Pattaya, is saying this appears to be the slowest peak season in a decade or more. I decided to go to Samui for the New Year, just today. I was shocked at how many rooms were available, how easy it was to get a booking on the ferry, and how many motorbike rental places had a large selection of bikes available. When I used to live on Samui, it was absolutely mobbed from the 15th of Dec. to about the 5th of Jan. Not this time around. 

 

Congratulations to the biggest joke, Prayuth, and the merry band of fools, for sabotaging a once dynamic industry, and doing everything in their power to discourage Western tourism. Once again the Thai people suffer, from an insufferable degree of hubris, arrogance, ignorance and incompetence.

Pray tell us what exactly is positive about this story. Lots of big cheeses smiling and pretending that Thailand is still the vacation spot of dreams , yet doing absolutely nothing concrete to make it so.

In their and your view Thailand is paradise , unfortunately a lot of tourists dont now seem to agree , will ignoring that fact make everything ok ?

One of my friends who has been to Thailand many times in the past (and lived here some time back) came in through Suvarnabhumi a few days ago.  This time instead of having a 60 day tourist visa, she wanted a visa on arrival.  She was given the third degree because she did not have her 'usual' visa.  She produced her ticket for her return flight and again was questioned because it was more than 30 days in the future.  The immigration officer then got shirty when she said she would get an extension at the local immigration office.  They are military people.  They know no grey - just black and white.  And they don't have the people or customer service skills to cope with westerners.

The best thing that could happen to Thailand is for no one to come for a year or two - that may change attitudes. Everyone knows its come spend get out mentality doesn’t make for a good holiday. Yes all countries NEED immigration laws but they don’t have to make it so blatant what will happen - most good people KNOW how to follow laws!! They need more sympathy and help for those with families trying to stay legally - until property ownership is relaxed people will always feel unwanted here!!

As a horror fan, I'd like to see them make a new version of the ABC of Death , based solely on ways to DIE in Thailand. They need to cure the tourist deah rate first !
