Rottweiler With Bad Legs

Featured Replies

I've got a 5 year old Rottweiler with shaky bad legs.

Today I heard a horrible cracking sound and realised it was coming from the her back legs, I was about 3m away from her so it must have been quite loud for me to hear it.

She had only just got up off the floor and it stopped after a few minutes. She didn't seem to be in any pain so for now I'll just keep my eye on her.

Is this common for Rotty's and should I be giving her any vitamins or supplements with her food. At the moment she has dry food and chicken breast most days and dry food and fish once a week.

Advice please :o

A clicking sound :o

I used to give her calcium bone thingys,

Kurgen, sorry to hear that!

First of all I would go for an xray of the hips.

Good luck for her!

OK, next question, where do I get an X ray in Pattaya.

Don't recommend the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital cos' I wouldn't even take my dog there :o

sorry about your dog's legs....

You can try at the "Animal Hospital" in soi Newprawan (sorry for the spelling....). It's in front of Newprawan market, from Sukhumvit, right side, you will see like an area with some shops and townhouses; the animal hospital is the building at the back.

I took my dog a couple of times there. It's ok.

Good luck !

Sounds like you dog may have Hipdysplacia, this is where the ball joing does not fit into the socket properly, but all is not lost there are two treatments or operations:

These are both recommendations from the Royal Veterinary college in London:

1 Cut the ball away from the top of the leg joint sounds impossible but the muscles grow around the legs and your dog leads a normal active life this way with no discomfort.

2 Serate the muscles on the inside of the dogs thighs there fore relaxing the taughtness between ball and socket.

But Xray 1st

My 7 yr old Rott also has hip dysplasia. What you need to do is go to the vet and ask about glucosamine supplements. Apparently it is good for the joints. UNfortunately a lot of big dogs have this condition here in Thailand. I found that swimming is also very good for this ailment. Try to avoid your dog from running, jumping or standing on its hind legs....there is also the surgery option but I wouldn't want to make a dog go through that...I believe the Vetenary Hospital in thonglor..soi 55 does it for around 60,000 baht...If I remember correctly they do one hip...then the other 6 months later. With swimming and glucosamine, I believe you can give your dog a good condition of life. You can do x-rays at Dr. Sukit in Naklua 30 meters on the left after the lights on the Pattaya-Naklua road...

also non steroid anti inflammatories for pain; cold weather of coarse exacerbates stiffness

swimming is good

standing on hind legs etc as listed, not good

keeping weight balanced not too fat

we chose not to do xrays on my boxer as it involved anesthesia (in israel, not sure about other countries) as we wanted to cert. him for stud. he was certified in finland but was consedered borderline here.

Luckily she's not into running and jumping.

Give me a couple of weeks and I'll teach her to walk on her front legs and see if that helps :o

Seriously, thanks for the advice
