BANGKOK, 21st December 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has chaired an unveiling ceremony for 50 new NGV buses specially designed to accommodate the elderly and disabled.

The 50 were commissioned at an event chaired by Prime Minister Gen Pratyu Chan-ocha at Bangkok City Hall 2 in Din Daeng. They are to better facilitate public travel in the capital.

All 50 were specially designed to accommodate elderly and disabled passengers and include digital signage for easy reading, 5 CCTVs for the monitoring of all passengers, retractable ramps for wheelchairs and two wheelchair spaces equipped with buttons for passengers to signal when they wish to disembark.

The buses are GPS tracking enabled, so that they may be monitored by smart phone users and will in the future offer Internet access. Their E-ticket systems allow welfare card holders to easily board and pay.

The Prime Minister described the buses as a New Year’s gift to the people and in line with the government’s wish to ensure travel equality.

The 35 seat buses have already begun running along the A1, A2, A3 and A4 routes between Don Muang, Mo Chit 2, Victory Monument, Suan Lumphini and Sanam Luang.

When was the last time you saw a person in a wheelchair around town trying to navigate the hazardous, clogged narrow and potholes pavement and footpath of this city, maybe once a year, same for the vevy old people, they just stay home, prisoners of their own government who doesn't provide and facilitated suitable access and clearways for such persons...

We have had similar buses in Khon Kaen for some time now that also cater for the disabled.

Quote: "Disabled passengers are also not left out, as there is a built-in lift for wheelchairs."

It’s going to become quite the industry with tens of thousands being maimed every year on the roads, in addition to others that are victims of corruption, lack of enforcement and just general uncaring about human lives

Are these the busses that sat on the port for some months? They seem to have resolved all the issues in that case.

Buses suited to the elderly and disabled , is that the passengers or the drivers , not clear on this ?

Those buses look nice.

He is probably the greatest person ever to run this country.

Good job by him!

So how the disable people come to the bus because not easy to use sidewalks or road's in a wheelchair or be blind for that matter

I just want to know what kind of disable people there can use this

Jeez cutting edge or what .. They need to keep that a close secret or other less advanced nations might copy it ..

One page of replies and not a good comment, for some, it seems nothing thais can do is good.

Sure there are a lot of problems, but this is Good news and a step (one of many needed) in the right direction.

Let's complain about the problems but also give credit where credit is due.

I agree with you. Those disabled people with flowers in their pockets who are emerging safely from the bus are testimony to the practical worth of the buses.

I don't know anything about disabled people emerging safely from busses with whatever in their pockets ,  or of how many elderly will appreciate easier access, but I know that the addition of easy access busses is a positive addition.

If I started a thread about not having easy access busses the same people who make fun of Thais about purchasing the busses will be making fun of the Thais for not purchasing the basses, damned if you do and damned if you don't!

I am tired of the Thai bushing at every opportunity! IMO it is juvenile, and disrespectful to our Thai hosts.

They certainly look elderly & disabled! Does that mean they ride for free???

I enjoy irony as much as the next person, but don't over-egg the pudding.

Busses, bushes, basses. I'm sure most Thais also see the same but are taught to just accept incompetence as a normal way of life
