South Korean golfers missing after falling into Nan river

Divers and rescuers are looking for two elderly South Korean golfers who are missing in Phitsanulok province after a golf cart they were riding was bumped from behind and fell into the river.

Jun Yong Sung, 68 and Jaseoong Ha, 76, were on a golf cart with their caddie parking on a ferry on the banks of Nan River in Prompiram district when another golf cart carrying two South Korean female golfers bumped into their cart from the rear. 

 

The impact pushed the first cart into the river. Their Thai caddie managed to swim back ashore but the two Koreans are still missing.

 

The ferry was about to bring the golfers back to their clubhouse when the accident happened.

The article says two Korean women were IN the 2nd cart, but it doesn't say either of them was actually driving it. The two male Koreans had a Thai caddy. That kind of suggests the two Korean women did also. But no mention of such a person in the article, perhaps deliberately.

 

Lucky there wasn't a boatful of Korean golfers looking to cross the river....

I always thought golf was a non-dangerous sport but like any other pleasure in life Thailand somehow manages to turn it into a perilous activity. 

South Korea has probably put out a safety alert for golfers contemplating playing Thai courses.

My sympathy. As Korean in their culture they would have their judgement in the underworld by Hade (Lord of the underworld). Hade asked the lady, "how many dogs had you eaten during your life-time?" The Korean lady put up 3 fingers. Lord of the underworld said, "only 3?" The Korean lady said in very soft voice, "3 thousands your lordship".

You actually cross the Nan river 6 or 8 times in a round.

 

You drive the buggy onto the boat and then get out. Then the second buggy drives on.

 

It only holds two carts.

 

Seems the husbands drove on first  and their wives followed but ran into the rear of their husbands cart and knocked it into the water.

So you're saying the caddies don't normally drive the carts?

 

Correct ...the Koreans normally share a cart ...so the golfers sit in the seats and the two caddies ride on the back.

 

I cant remember if there were any stops but don't remember considering it a problem even when MrsJ was driving.

 

Think we always got out of the buggie during the crossing ...

Death of a golfer by drowning would be a very rare event but somehow Thailand can manage to pull it off. The dangers that lurk within are not usually caused by bad luck. 

From the photo, it looks as if the ferry pontoon has no proper bow/stern gates to prevent such an accident - unbelievable!

Bodies of two missing South Korean golfers in Nan found

 

 

The bodies of two elderly South Korean golfers who went missing after their golf cart fell into the Nan river in the northern province of Nan following an accident on a floating platform on Tuesday have been found.

 

The body of 68-year old Mr Jun Yong Sung was found floating at a spot about three kilometres from the scene of the accident by a search team of volunteers from charity organizations which called off the search by frog men and instead scoured the downstream river in boats, believing that the bodies would float to the surface after 24 hours since they went missing into the river.

 

Jun Yong Sung’s body was found Wednesday night floating on the surface of the river by the search team which plucked the body from the water and sent it to the Buddha Chinnarat hospital in Muang district of Phitsanulok for an autopsy.

On second thought may be those Korean golfers couldn't swim? Because the golf cart or buggy is an open vehicle with no doors at all open on all sides . Something is wrong somewhere.

If they could swim how did the drowning take place anyone knows?

Out of interest, are any shots played across the river? Sounds like the ideal recipe for a six-hour round.

I have seen it near Pattaya where the wives take a cart and do not play. Just follow the men around. Happened to us us once when we turned up with 19 of us and all the carts had been taken because unbelievably the Koreans had insisted on one cart per person. So a foursome had 8 carts a group. Despite us booking 10 carts none were available. So we put the older blokes in the later groupsas carts were coming back from the very early birds in 20 minutes. Any sensible person would insist the wives travel with the husband.

 

Any sensible golf course would have the caddies drive them on to a boat so as to avoid this.

So this article says the two men were in one cart and their wives in the second, and the women bumped them into the water.  The other article we have here says each couple shared a cart, both driven by the men, one cart bumped the first and it ended up in the water, and the man in the second cart jumped in to help the first two.

 

Which was it?  Which journalist was... um... misinformed?
