restriction on number of SETV?

Featured Replies

sorry if this has been asked before, I went through several threads and seemed to get different answers so looking for clarification.

Im not old enough for a retirement visa (not long though) and want to stay in Thailand for a few years for my health and to get away from the uk stress! I have a residual income that easily supports my lifestyle (around $3k a month). last time I stayed in Thailand several years ago by picking up a METV 1 year in uk but I see this has been discontinued for a 6 month one and all new rules in place. it seems I really only fit in with the SETV. so my question is if there is a limit on the number of SETV you can have concurrently. one post I read said it was a maximum of 3 in a row and then you had to leave Thailand for 4 months, is this correct? also I see it says 60 days stamp, are we still able to extend the visa by 30 days at immigration? many thanks in advance for your valued advice.

As far as I know there was never a multiple entry tourist visa before they started doing them in November of 2015 (valid for 6 months), Before that there were 1 entry, 2 entry and 3 entry tourist visas. The 2 and 3 entry visas were valid for 6 months.

There is no written rule that states a limit on how many single entry tourist visa you can get nor any amount of time between getting one.

The only limit is how many you can get at the embassy or consulate where you apply for it.

this was mannnnnny years ago in the uk embassy, must have been around 2008 I got a 1 year tourist visa-long gone now I guess. So, as long as you have the SETV there is not any issue or set rule with immigration? if I have the visa I shouldn't have any issue? trying to plan this right to maybe get a METV after 6 months of keeping 5k in my uk account....

There are many ways you can stay in los. You indicated your not that far off 50. Then you will be able to obtain non o based on retirement and do annual extensions. Easy.

In mean time, personally I would obtain METV in UK. After that use setv,s. Your UK so you can obtain setv in saigon. UK are visa exempt for Vietnam. Also obtain setv at "nice" border crossings such as Vientiane. Of course mix in few visa exempt entries. Etc etc. Not hard. Especially if its for couple of years.

Talk to the London Embassy, explain your situation, and ask what they require from you to provide you with an METV. I should be possible without you being in employment. Your plan could be:

  • Once a year, an METV from the UK.
  • A border bounce every 60 days to get a fresh 60-day stay in Thailand. The last border bounce should be just before the Enter before date of the visa.
[Assuming you apply for your METV about two weeks before your first entry into Thailand, this will take you up to about 7 1/2 months after you arrive in Thailand.]
  • Travel to Vientiane, and apply for an SETV. That will take you to about 9 1/2 months after your first entry.
[The approach now depends on how long you want to spend in the UK on your annual visits. I assume one month which means you want another 1 1/2 months roughly in Thailand.]
  • Do a border bounce for a  30-day visa exempt entry. Go to an immigration office and extend this for a further 30 days on payment of 1,900 baht.
  • ... return to the UK, rinse and repeat until you qualify for retirement.

I am guessing that he may have been referring to the long discontinued Non O to visit family and friends "social" visas.

good plan! I will talk to the embassy in uk, at worst I could do a couple of single entries first while I build up a 6 month of 5k in account bank record, then go back to uk and get METV. thanks! ????

Getting the METV first is a better plan and it can actually go almost 9 months if timed right not 7 1/2 then you could get a couple single TV nearby and have them each last 3 months with extensions. Why go back to the U.K. with several SETV back to back?  Could be a red flag. Get the METV first.
