What is the point of this speculation. Nobody knows anything now other than 7 are tragically dead, and many wounded including at least one critically. No reason at all for speculation at a time like this.

Of course there is.

Schools need to understand why it happened to try to prevent it happening again.

Oh no! So very sad 😪

Nonthaburi school shooting leaves seven dead

IMG_9518.jpeg

Seven people have been killed in a shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on Thursday, 7 August, 3 teachers, 3 pupils and the gunman, with the reported 14 year old student, believed to have carried out the attack in a classroom.

Officers reported that the student had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died while being transported to hospital. Many other people were injured and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities moved to clear the school after the situation was brought under control, while students who remained on the premises were escorted out of the area.

Families arrive as school is cleared

Parents travelled to the school to collect their children once officials began the evacuation. Relatives of some teachers were seen crying after learning of the shooting.

The National Blood Centre said it had coordinated with hospitals near the school in Nonthaburi to ensure blood supplies were available for treatment of those injured in the attack.

Prime Minister orders urgent care for injured

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said at Government House at 11.10am that he had received reports of the shooting at the school in the Nonthaburi area.

He said he had ordered urgent assistance for those injured and instructed relevant officials to go to the scene.

"It is very bad, what has happened," Anutin said. He also expressed sorrow for those who died, saying he was deeply saddened and questioned how such an event could happen in Thailand.

IMG_9526.png

The prime minister said the shooting was among the reasons the government would not agree to renew licences for carrying and possessing firearms.

Asked whether action would be taken against the shooter's parents in connection with the weapon, Anutin did not answer. He nodded before leaving the media interview.

Questions over firearms controls

IMG_9519.png

Thailand has legal routes for firearm ownership and licensing, although weapons regulations and enforcement have repeatedly drawn scrutiny after violent incidents. Anutin's comments indicate that firearm licence renewals will remain a government concern following the Nonthaburi attack.

There was one earlier this year in the south, and an awful one a few years ago where kindergarten kids were shot and stabbed to death. Sad times.

Of course it's not near what happened in the US, but I'm thinking this will continue, as Thailand has it's share of a lot more mass shootings than many realize...................https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Thailand

Guns are legal here, along with many that aren't, just like the US, with people here shooting each other over petty things a lot. Carrying them around legally is strictly limited.

What an absolute tragedy- deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased

I hope those that are in hospital all survive

oh fredwiggy beat me to it
Guns are legal, and just like the US, NOT everyone can get them legally
but it is not difficult to buy one
the applicant simply needs a million baht* in cash or assets
then there is a 3 month wait
(obvs they have an "express" option)

*There is no set amount, but basically you need to have something worth protecting
the more you show the better, under a million is unlikely, as my wife was told.

The youth of US have been living under a dark shadow for a long time now. I really hope this disease isn't making its way over here.

Cannot have 14 year-olds access to firearms. Parents have to take resposibility. Decision to renew licenses for carrying and possessing firearms is no longer an option. The answer is "no" and i agree with prime minister on this one.

Two grandparents found shot after Nonthaburi school attack

In 20 years Ive never heard of this- USA mirroring - so sad.

June 2003 — Pak Phanang school shooting, Nakhon Si Thammarat: 17-year-old Anatcha Boonkwan fatally shot two classmates and injured four others with a 9mm pistol, apparently over a personal dispute.

October 2022 — Uthai Sawan day-care shooting, Nong Bua Lamphu: A former police officer facing a drug charge burst into a day care center, killing dozens of preschoolers and teachers before fleeing and killing more people, with at least 36 people slain — the deadliest rampage in the nation’s history.  The gunman, Panya Kamrap, 34, killed his wife and child before taking his own life; this ranks as the worst mass shooting by a sole perpetrator in Thai history.

February 11, 2026 — Patongprathankiriwat School, Hat Yai, Songkhla: An 18-year-old allegedly opened fire and briefly took students and teachers hostage, using a handgun stolen from police.  The school’s director/teacher, Sasiphat Sinsamosorn, died from her injuries; the suspect had a history of substance abuse and had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital in December.

August 7, 2026 (today) — Debsirin Nonthaburi School, Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi: A student opened fire, killing at least six people — three students and three teachers — with more than a dozen others wounded, in one of Thailand’s deadliest school shootings in recent years.

In some respects, although school shootings aren't nearly as frequent here, the potential for more of this is indeed possible in Thailand. Usually it involves 19 or 20ish year old guys at technical colleges fighting with students from other tech colleges and guns are often involved. But (as I mentioned in another thread) a very senior cop was interviewed about how fast an argument or conflict can turn deadly here. He said in the West a random conflict or insult can lead to a punch up, but rarely death. Here an insult, loss of face, etc., can go from initial physical altercation to murder/manslaughter in the blink of an eye - often with guns. They fight to kill, not just to win. Eventually we will learn of the motive in this case. Let's hope the injured can recover quickly, and no one else dies.
