You Are Thailand's New Minster Of Finance

Recommended Posts

If you were appointed the Thailand's Minister of Finance what would you do? How woud you make sure the Baht isn't whipped around by heartless currency traders. How would you stop foreigners from buying up the stock market and all the people of Thailand's land. Keep the economy growing at a healthy rate in order to look good on all the charts in Economist magazine. Stop Thaksin from taking his money out of the country and spending it on his favorite football team in England. Keep export prices low. Your people happy.... What's YOUR plan???

Well all the examples you gave above are currently happening so I guess he would come in and say 'same plan as normal then...'

What would be nice would be to have one come in who actually promoted an open market, who questioned the FBA ruling, who allowed foreigners to own something to support their investment here, to talk to immigration and the labour exchange and have a co-ordinated plan that provides a level of comfort and ease by which foreigners can reap the benefits of their investment beyond 60 days, 90 days, 1 year and to look at Malaysia and China and all those other countries currently driving themselves forward rather than backwards... but hey, if one did come in and do all of this then he wouldn't last long now would he.

The most successful finance minister under the current climate would be the one who comes in and says "it's all their fault" whilst pointing the finger outside of Thailand at everyone else"

The first thing I would do is sort out the TIT nonsense whereby half the ministries are encouraging foreigners to bring foreign currency to Thailand and having all sorts of controls to stop money leaving the country and thus strengthen the baht while at the same time the other half , the BOT in particular are trying to keep it out, using draconian methods, to prevent the baht getting too strong !
