Former Transport Minister: King Power causes 16 Billion Baht income loss to the government

BANGKOK, 17 June 2009 (NNT) – Former Transport Minister and current Puea Thai Party MP Santi Prompat revealed an income loss of the government in the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, citing that airport space rental contracts were violated by the King Power Group.

Santi said the space usage of King Power itself was found to exceed the rental contract from 22,000 square meters to 27,000 square meters while the space usage of the Duty Free shops area was found to exceed the contract from 5,000 square meters to 12,000 square meters. These measurements were conducted by airport staff and prosecutors.

The former minister cited that the unpaid, overused space by the King Power Group at the Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) had caused a total income loss of the government by 16 billion baht after four years of the company’s operation in the airport.

Santi said that if the government probed this issue and could recover the loss, they could construct a third runway in the Suvarnabhumi International Airport without seeking any additional loans.
