Thailand ratifies ILO convention on workers in fishing industry

THAILAND HAS ratified ILO’s Work in Fishing Convention and promises to amend existing laws within a year so they are in line with regulations on protecting workers on board fishing vessels.

 

 

Labour Minister Pol General Adul Sangsingkeo yesterday presented the instrument of ratification for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Work in Fishing Convention No 188, 2007 (C188) to ILO director-general Guy Ryder at the agency’s office in Geneva to much applause. 

 

The C188 ensures fishing workers have decent working conditions, fair working hours, decent accommodation, food, water and medical care, and the fishing vessels are regularly and effectively inspected to see if these standards are being followed. 

 

 

The ratification proves Thailand’s commitment to protecting workers on board fishing vessels from slave-like conditions, Adul said at the ceremony. 

 

Once the ratification is completed, Thailand will amend conflicting laws and regulations within a year, he said, adding that this will improve the image of the country’s fishing industry, making it more ethical while attracting more workers and easing the labour shortage. 

 

The ratification of C188 yesterday follows a recent ratification of the Convention Concerning Forced or Compulsory Labour, 1930 (No 29).

 

This is part of the Kingdom’s move to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing since 2015, which led the European Union to lift Thailand’s “yellow card” on fishing this month. 

 

Last year, the US also upgraded Thailand from Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 2 for its moves in tackling human trafficking.

Thailand ratifying any international agreement is often meaningless and rarely followed...

Thais ratify anything if they think it kicks the ball a bit further down the road and hope other will forget about the whole deal. In this case, they won't.
