My retirement visa expires in July. I know that I can apply to renew it any time during the 30 day period ending on the expiration date. However, I have tentative plans to travel outside Thailand, from a date in May that is about 60 days before the visa expiration date, not returning until September.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to renew a retirement visa at a Thai embassy overseas? I have been told by my bank that they would be willing to send to me overseas the bank statement I will need for renewal.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

No Consulates are not into extensions of stay - but it is likely if you visit Immigration 60 days early with your flight tickets that they will process you.
