I am American and a retired police officer.  Some say things are getting worse but I would say "you ain't see nothing yet":

 

1. Sunday mass stabbing in Michigan. 11 injured.  This was at a Wal Mart

2. Monday morning mass shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno NV. 3 Killed.  Shooter arrested.

3.  Monday evening mass shooting in Manahattan NY. 4 killed including an off duty NYPD officer who was working a overtime security job.  The shooter killed himself and was armed with a M4. The shooter was from Las Vegas, NV.  CNN contributtor John Miller, a former NYPD deputy commissioner, initially said "the shooter is possibly white". No John his name was Shane Tamura and does not look "white". 

4. Though not a shooting but there was a large brawl/attack in downtown that resulted in multiple arrests and the video of the attack has had a lot of clicks.  This was in Cincinnati, OH.

 

When I move back to US the first thing I am going to do is buy a Glock 17 or 19.

Self defense. Of course a handgun is no match to an M4 loaded with a 30 round mag but I have over 30 years of firearms experience and I would rather do down fighting than the other way.  The NYPD officer was armed with his pistol but if the suspect gets the drop on you then there is no defense for that.  As a graduate of the US Army Armor Officer course in Fort Knox a tank is difficult to manuever on city streets. The better alternative is an armored SUV.  But the cost of such a vehicle is out of reach for most($100,000 just for the armor and this does not include the vehicle).

If nobody is allowed to have guns it would give me a better feeling of safety. A scumbag on dope with a gun at hand is a nightmare for me.

2nd Ammendment of the US constitution would have to be repealed first.  This would be very difficult to accomplish.

Even as an American I realize the country is not advanced.  Compared to Asian countries and European countries America at under 250 years old is like a baby that cries and has tantrums.  But the problem is the baby has the biggest Army, Air Force and Navy.  Is it better to be feard than loved?  I don't know. Of course all nations decline and often rebound.  Often nations implode from within.

Maybe the US is in fact in decline, as looking at this Wiki list, the number of mass shootings before 1966 show that they are quite rare (Wiki actually included the Kennedy Assassination as a pre 1966 mass shooting!). Since and especially since the 1990s they have skyrocketed and are getting worse and worse and worse. Yet guns were much more easily available before 1966. What changed?

I often wonder how distorted 'our' view is of violence in the States......we are fed a constant stream of movies glorifying violence, news items telling us about horrific happenings......but as you say.....it's a big country.

M4 is a military destination.  it was an AR15.

Many reasons.  Some financial (an opportunity that could pay off or not) and a chance to set some permanent roots down until this life ends. For me Thailand has been good but I have never felt home here.
