Don't worry - there is no coup, Thai military reassures citizens

Thailand's military on Sunday issued a statement to reassure citizens that the country is not about to witness yet another military coup.

 

After film of a military convoy travelling in Lopburi was posted online the army was forced to explain that there were no military moves in the lead up to the election.

 

It was just exercises. 

 

One woman had made a video with accompanying exclamations that it all seemed suspicious - she might have read one of the signs in Thai on the side of a tank. 

 

It said "on exercises".

 

Still, the video caused widespread concern and forced Piyapong Klinphan to issue a statement saying it was just part of army training that was being carried on between February 1st and 21st. 

 

Also at the weekend came a post purporting to be a ministerial directive in the government gazette ordering the sacking of the army commander in chief Apirat Kongsompong and other senior generals. 

 

Article 44 was mention as being used to remove the high ranking generals.

 

PM spokesman Thaksada Sangkhajan said it was fake and officials had been instructed to file a complaint to arrest the perpetrator. 

 

The order was no longer present on the www.mratchakitcha.soc.go.th site.

So not actually a military coup, just training for one...

Urgent : Legal action to be taken against perpetrators of fake junta order

The Secretariat of the Cabinet is planning to take legal action against the individuals who falsified a junta order removing the military's commanders in chief, deputy government spokeswoman Taksada Sangkachan said on Monday.

 

She also warned the public not to believe the order, saying Savitri Chamnarnkit, assistant secretary general of the Cabinet has already asked police to file charges against those behind the production of the order.

 

The order, which indicated that active post commanders of the Army, Navy and the Air Force, were to be removed, spread on social network platforms during the weekend. It also claimed the transfers were royally approved and promulgated in the Royal Gazette. 

 

The fake order coincided with rumours of a possible coup d'etat.

Unfortunately some speculators fail to realise that militaries around the world don't just sit on their backsides all the time. They do actually have to get out of camp to move to training areas. Never a dull moment for the tinfoil hat brigade though is there?

 

Also- they are not 'TANKS' they are BTR-3 Ukrainian designed Armoured Personnel Carriers. it makes sense for them to be on the road in that area as there are a number of military training areas around Lop Buri.

 

This Thai lady looks as sexy as some of the Vietnamese officials I used to deal with in Hanoi back in 1989... 

Speaking to a mate who lives in Suphan Kwai near the army HQ there was a lot of activity yesterday.

Just an exercise for polling day.  If prayuth doesn't like the result he can have the coup on the same day

Not easy to do anything stealth anymore with all the smartphones/social media. News travels quicker than a western union transfer to 'tirak'

Toyland history shows that if the election result is not satisfactory, a military coup will happen, I would think befor songran can add one more to the 28 in the past 70 years or so....

If military says there is no coup, then it's almost guaranteed.

Exactly! Why would anyone be suspicious of a coup in a country that's had the most coups and has just had a political bombshell dropped on them. Crazy thinking.

Talk about famous last words! As was said already (above), just before the last coup took place, the military gave assurances that there were no plans for a coup....

Someone will wake up tomorrow morning, yawn, scratch their balls, and think ' what shall we do today ?' I know, lets have a coup 

The only way that we will know is if you turn on the telly and there is nothing being broadcast other than the official Thai Symbol!  That's how I found out the last time and when I asked my wife she just said that there had been a coup as if it was a daily occurrence!

They call them golf courses here and you are right, those are not tanks they are armoured golf carts for players to shelter in when dangerous 4's are flying around.
