They actually tried to shoo ov the Spanish vrigate with a rubber dingy. Oh, the might ov Gibraltar!!

 

It is a weird anomaly that should be resolved. Having said that, the same goes vor Ceuta.

We could send our whole Royal Navy there, all 5 of them, plus an aircraft carrier with no operational aircraft, that will sort them out.

It will have to get jolly hot to swamp the Rock of Gibraltar! Mind you, the first thing that will happen will be that the isthmus linking The Rock to the mainland will be flooded, turning it into an Island. All those Spanish Civil Guard chaps who so enjoyed hassling travelers to and from the rock (and have continued their antics from time to time whilst Spain and the UK were both members of the EU) will have to learn to swim, their extraordinary little shiny varnished hats will get all soggy, and the cigarettes which without exception were carried in the (usually unbuttoned) shirt pockets will get wet!

I was there in the mid-1980s, The border was actually closed much of the time, and when it was open crossing could be difficult. The Rock seemed to do all right economically notwithstanding that.

If Spain were drawn in the same group as Gibraltar in football World Cup qualifiers would they refuse to play them?

well it did okay in all the months and years that the border was closed. If I recall, it was on the Spanish side that the local economy suffered the most,  as no workers were allowed to cross. if the border is closed, thousands of Spanish will be out of a job.

I don't think Gibraltar will be affected greatly by import duties and taxes, the largest contribution to their economy is refueling ships then there are the offshore banks and the casinos, none of which are in any way helped by being in the EU, in fact some of which will be potentially more profitable without needing the meet EU regulation.

About 8000 Spanish work in Gibraltar but here will also be 5000 Brits who live in Gibraltar but work in Spain who find themselves out of a job.

I remember a John Cleese skit.

It was about each countries reaction to terror alerts. France was to start up the white flag factories.

Germany was to play martial music louder.

Australia was to say, no worries, lets crank up the barbie.

Spain was to build glass bottomed submarines.

To review the former navy, now underwater.

There is no EU military. EU is an economic and political Union, exclusive of military.
