LONDON (Reuters) - A Spanish warship tried to order commercial shipping to leave anchorages in British waters near Gibraltar but was challenged by the British navy and sailed away, Gibraltar said.

The Spanish ship tried to order ships to leave their anchorages on the eastern side of the Rock but the ships stayed in position.

The British navy challenged the Spanish warship which then sailed slowly along the coast with its weapons uncovered and manned, Gibraltar said.

"There is only nuisance value to these foolish games being played by those who don't accept unimpeachable British sovereignty over the waters around Gibraltar," a spokesman for Gibraltar said.

What happens when Spain remains a member of the EU and the UK leaves?

Expect more of this...

It is a deflection from the political turmoil that exists in Spain right now, maybe they would be better sorting out their own affairs, it is clear Gibraltar wants to remain as part of the UK until they determine otherwise

I agree Gibraltar, although it is an oddity, should determine its own fate and that so far they voted to stay with the UK. Small detail however: they also voted almost unanimously against Brexit. Let's see what the spokesman has to say about nuisances when the Brexit dust settles.

Well obviously your not keeping  up with the news.

This is just one of many contentious plans, being drawn up by those unelected Bureaucrats in Brussels.

Where exactly are bureaucrats elected?

Lovely photograph at top of Gibraltar.

Some people really wish to se3 the EU as a dictatorship. Never mind that they vote for their representatives in the EU Parliament,  that their national parliament is represented in the EU council and that as on a national level the people don't get to vote on minister, bureaucrats etc. Or that despite talks of further army integration or an EU army, such stuff won't pass unless the members give their thumbs up. The UK have it's thumbs up in approximately 95% of cases but Brussels is clearly evil. Sovereignty, boss over our closed borders!!

As for the ship, Spain's navy being silly. Members do silly things. But then we resort to debates, diplomacy etc to sort things out.

Ever heard of an alliance

Just as an interesting aside, the French police heavy vehicles sent to counter the yellow vests bore the EU symbol rather than the French flag.

It is fair to say however that there are proposals, (and some enthusiasm in some influential circles) to create a EU military as one of the next steps towards creating an "ever closer union".

Well Gibraltar has been a British Territory since 1713 when it was ceded in perpetuity by the Treaty of Utrecht. Spain joined the EU in 1986. I suppose things will carry on in much the same way as they did In those 273 years. The Spanish military making such comic opera "threatening" moves is not exactly new, both during those 273 years and during British and Spanish membership of the EU.

Giving up Gibraltar will be the price of a "deal" with the EUSSR. Treason would betray them in a heartbeat.

Too much talking and not enough shooting these days IMHO.

War in Europe is coming, what the sides will be is anyone's guess.

Civil unrest in .........

Greece and Italy doesn't seem to be reported at all, but it must be happening.

Spain has gone very quiet, they can't have arrested all the Catalans.

France we hear about, but the media plays it down, despite serious rioting every weekend.

That may be a temporary situation:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/24/brexit-may-gives-way-over-gibraltar-after-spains-veto-threat

  • On the eve of Sunday’s special Brexit summit, the British ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow, wrote to concede that Gibraltar would not necessarily be covered by a future trade deal with the EU.
  • The development gives Spain a veto over Gibraltar benefiting from a future trade and security agreement between Brussels and the British government.
  • The Spanish leader, Pedro Sánchez, reacted immediately, claiming the UK would now have to open talks on “joint sovereignty” of Gibraltar, over which Spain has had a claim since the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

History tells us the UK was always a part of the ancient Chinese empire.

The Chinese will turn the UK into the Hong Kong of Europe.

Glad to see the RN sent a launch and an inflatable dinghy to shoo off the dastardly Diegos. Didn't see any rubber ducks though, and none of the British matelots cried when their iPhones were taken away.  Rule Britannia!

Nothing. Spain might hope stirring this pot will distract it's people from Catalonia independence; or increase nationalism. Doubtful - apart from among the fascists.

Other EU nations won't be interested and the EU bureaucrats won't. Spain couldn't even get the former Catalan leader extradited from within the EU. The EU and member states won't condone a member flaunting international law.

At some point the UK will tire of this childish behavior and admonish suitable punishment.

The only military alliances that contain any of the countries listed also contain the UK and these alliances are in not affected by Brexit.  Spain cannot invade the UK without a UN Security Council Resolution being passed which could not be passed without the consent of the UK.  Spain cannot invade the UK without NATO being automatically obliged to invoke Article 5 forcing all NATO members to offer military support to the UK.

Indeed. When the Brexit referendum result was announced, a German lady politician, I think FM at the time, applauded saying she was glad the British and their veto would be gone and that the EU could now carry on with projects like the establishment of a EU Military under EU command and loyal to the EU.

Necessary as the EU moves to closer federalism and to ensure people do as their told. As another German politician announced at the time "elections can't be allowed to change things"!

A more closely federalist EU is likely to be more totalitarian in outlook, more regulated socially and more controlled by politicians and bureaucrats than the people. The electorate will be more remote from influencing decisions.

People in EU member states have been disarmed, with more and more stringent regulations. That hasn't happened by chance!

Yeah, what we really need is a chancer who got one lucky break and then caused the needless deaths of tens of thousands of sailors.

Who cares? Global warming will take care of all those coast places, little islands and eventually UK anyway right? 555

It will certainly "take care" of much of Norfolk.  But, on the plus side, will at least allow them to get some use from their webbed feet.
