‘Asean Ethnic Festival’ kicks off in colourful style on Friday

More than 100 Asian performers will showcase their colourful dances at the “Asean Ethnic Festival” in Bangkok this weekend.

 

Hosted by the Culture Ministry, the festival – part of the celebration of “137 Years of Rattanakosin under Royal Benevolence” – is designed to fit the theme of “Asean cultural diversity”.

 

Thailand has the chairmanship of Asean this year.

 

The festival will kick off at 6.30pm on Friday at the National Museum, where performers from Asean member states, except Brunei and Singapore, plus dancers from India and China will share their unique ethnic dances on the same stage.

 

On Saturday and Sunday, the troupes will perform at the Asean Cultural Centre on the 3rd floor of the Rachadamnoen Contemporary Art Centre, on Rachadamnoen Klang Avenue near the Democracy Monument. 

 

The shows start at 1pm and 3pm and admission is free, with the festival wrapping at the National Museum at 6pm on Sunday.

 

During the festival, dancers and cultural experts from Asean+ will also share and exchange knowledge and wisdom through performing arts, as well as seeking cooperation on cultural exchanges in the near future.

The height of irony is that the man in the photograph is a senior member of a clique that has been bent upon eradicating cultural diversity in Thailand since the first coup of 1933.

 

At which time it was, of course, Siam.

 

Renaming it Thailand, in 1939, was part of the homogenising process.
