As summer temperatures heat up, department stores and shopping centres are also heating up in their efforts to pull in shoppers by offering massive discounts and prizes.

Robinson is offering giveaways worth over Bt9 million with the aim to boost growth by more than 10 per cent during the first quarter of this year.

“Robinson is spending more than Bt35 million in marketing to roll out the ROBINSON SUMMER FREE.VER,” Erlinda Petpisit, Robinson Public Co Ltd’s head of marketing communication, said.

This campaign will run at all 49 Robinson department stores until June 2, offering shoppers not just big discounts, but also freebies worth over Bt4 million.

For instance, when shoppers redeem discount coupons of up to 40 per cent, they will get an additional 18 per cent discount as well as a chance to win a gold necklace worth over Bt500,000.

The1 Card holders, who spend more than Bt3,000, will get 800 points, and if they spend over Bt5,000, they will get to take home a “summer tumbler”.

Aeon credit-card holders will also enjoy cashback credits of up to Bt30,000.

Meanwhile, giveaways worth over Bt5 million are being offered at the 22 Robinson lifestyle shopping centres nationwide from March 14 to April 24.

Shoppers will get a chance to win one of the 22 luxury packages on offer, including a stay at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi and return tickets on Air Asia.

“With our summer promotions and marketing events, Robinson is confident in taking a share of the market this summer. We hope our campaigns will gain a positive feedback once again, while keeping the spending momentum going through the summer months. The campaign is expected to contribute more than 10 per cent growth in sales and 30 per cent growth in shoppers and visitors, which will bring Robinson closer to the goals set for this quarter,” Erlinda said.

From what I see, most people are in there to suck off the air-con when it's melting hot!

As my dollar weakens , it will take more than a ridiculous add campaign to ''lure me in''...

The discounts will inevitably be on some plastic tat whilst your £1 fray Bentos  steak pie remains at the amazing value of £7.50 in line with the total rinsing experience you will find everywhere else????

Why did they even bother to translate this into English? :cheesy:

Ooh a summer tumbler...

Given that most of the stuff sold in Robinsons seems to be 40%+ more expensive than elsewhere, the discounts don't really mean much do they?

Our toaster broke. My wife, who is usually thrifty and pretty sensible suggested we go to Future Park Rangsit Robinsons to buy a new one.....You can imagine my reply.....

....then again that 'summer tumbler' is tempting if I buy a 3000 Baht toaster!

Oh..its 5000 baht to get a tumbler....DAMN!!! May have to splash out and get a toasted sandwich maker!!

Unbridled Consumerism is simply ugly.

I read it, my first thought was who would be unlucky enough to die of a broken neck with that weight of gold around it?

Wonder what kind of cut TV gets from this misleading 'article'.

Careful! I once questioned the validity of an article and was banned for several days as punishment for questioning the unseen, shadowy figures that apply the TV rules. It's actually, by the look of it, a press release by Robinsons, but is deemed to be 'news' by our masters and those at The Nation. So we have to accept it as a news item or risk being blocked.

It is not unusual, in my experience in Asia and the Middle East, to see press releases published as news in this way. I know - I write some. There is little or no line drawn between advertising and news in those regions, so what TV does is considered perfectly normal and acceptable. In other areas of the world, it would not be.

You could always use The Dissenter if you want no censorship. Pretty quiet in there though.

As far as I know, Thais don't "celebrate" summer.

Fairly certain the 2 skin-whitening cream models in the advert photo wouldn't be caught dead out in the sun.

"Horray, it's summertime! Let's go to the beach!"
