Anyone in the college system knows it's full of fraud. It's not only this but guy's buying cribs over the internet. I knew a Turkish guy who got straight As throughout the course, I thought this guy is really intelligent, then I caught him looking at a crib before one of the exams.

Cheating is global and immortal. The 'developed' do it diplomatically and with much finesse. The 'undeveloped' way of doing it is crude.

This is a very educative article for many TVF members who often post derogatory comments about Thailand and the 3rd world countries pretending to be living in an Ivory tower.

Nothing new here. In New York lots parents pay their doctors to diagnose their bubala with ADD so the  poor bubala can have more time to take their exams. It is a rotten world out there. Being honest does not take you very far. It is all about lying and cover up as long you don't get caught, everything is fine.

I get what you are saying and there is corruption but in Thailand it is done in the open and seemingly encouraged.

White collar crimes tend to be punished very leniently.

People might take my next comment as US bashing, but it is not. It is one of my favourite places in the world and I have lots of friends from there.

 

I was there recently for a business trip, as I have been many times before. The thing that always strikes me is the disparity between rich and poor as well as the absolute entitlement of the rich, and how they are fawned upon. 

 

 

Catching the train between NY and DC along he side of the railway track I say dwellings that wouldn’t be too far removed from what you’d see in some parts of the developed world. Slightly nicer perhaps, but not much.

 

Then you see news stories such as this, which you’d expect to read about in Asia or Africa.

 

It just confirms what one of my friends told me when I was there...the US is a developed third world country.

So how old was he, 6 or 7?   

 

I got into an argument with my adult, well educated, but not necessarily too bright Republican son and he lost by a wide margin.   It took a little longer than 2 minutes.

 

I am not sure what all this has to do with this college scandal, though.   People with money sometimes feel entitled and that their children are as well.   

 

I think this will bring a whole lot of folks who float in that upper echelon of privilege down a notch or two.   

 

I think a lot of privileged kids at Ivy league schools will be brought down a notch or to by their classmates as well.

Well, college kids these days are conditioned to think a certain way, just as we were in our day. It takes a lot of living to sort out what was true and what wasn't, but in the meantime I make them defend their positions and sometimes they can't. I don't browbeat them with mine as I've discovered that's not particularly useful to them.  The best you can ever hope for is that about 6 months later you hear something like your position coming from their lips which somehow they arrived at themselves. Another thing I do is I tell them I'm open to being be persuaded by them if they make an effective argument.

Good technique. Too bad they never make an effective argument, they just, like the older peers, devolve to insults.

Nowadays it is very common for professors to allow students students to bring notes into class while testing. You never saw such small writing in your life.

 

The only prof I ever had that allowed notes during a test was a Calculus prof I had. His thinking being that if you didn't understand the material no amount of notes is going to rescue you in the 50 minutes allotted for the test.

 

I got the last laugh on him however. He used to assign odd numbered problems from the back of the chapter as homework. I noticed after the first test that the test consisted of all the even numbered problems. I brought this up to my study group and we went into the next test with all the even numbered problems worked out and it continued that way throughout the semester. I count it as one of my greatest achievements.

Sometimes, but they know they've done that, if they've done that, and it is a safe facing measure, at the time. I don't need to spike the football. I prefer to play a longer game where they become well rounded and take into consideration all viewpoints, not just those that have been spoon fed to them.

Notwithstanding the old story of walking barefoot through the snow for 6 miles to go to school, I could not graduate college in 1981 sans a typed (IBM selectric) 24 page double spaced thesis. And open book exams did not exist.

IBM electric ...... luxury ....... I had to use a manual typewriter, double spaced extra thick paper to make it seem more than it was.

I had a class where I had to crank out one of those per week. Doesn't seem particularly onerous.
