Former Local Council Member Shot Dead While Tapping Rubber Trees, Mistaken for Boar
A former member of the Sri Song Rak Subdistrict Municipal Council in Loei Province was tragically shot and killed while working in a rubber plantation, reportedly mistaken for a wild boar by a local hunter. The body of the victim, 64-year-old Mr. Somjit Sopradit, was discovered in the forest approximately 12 kilometres from the village of Nam Phu, in the Dan Sai District. At around 13.00 on November 13, Pol. Lt. Chaiyut Kosajan, Deputy Inspector of the Dan Sai Police Station, was alerted to a death in a nearby forest area. Authorities, including forensic specialists, medical staff from Dan Sai Hospital, and rescue teams, immediately proceeded to the remote scene, reachable only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Upon arrival, officials found Mr. Somjit’s body lying on his back. He was dressed in a white T-shirt with a military-style camouflage jacket and long black pants, without shoes. A single gunshot wound to the neck, suspected to be from a hunting rifle, was observed on the right side, exiting through the left side of his neck. There were no spent casings or signs of struggle near the scene, According to his son, Mr. Apisit Sopradit, 25, his father regularly went to the plantation on his motorbike to tap rubber and usually returned home by 21.00. When he did not come home the previous night, family members went looking but could not locate him. Early the next morning, his son resumed the search and discovered his father’s lifeless body. Initially, they thought Mr. Somjit might have succumbed to illness, but closer inspection revealed a gunshot wound to the neck. Authorities were notified immediately. Mr. Apisit noted that his father had no known disputes with anyone, leading the family to believe the incident was likely an accident. Given the presence of wild boar tracks in the area, it is suspected that a hunter mistook Mr. Somjit for an animal. Local residents frequently hunt in the surrounding forest, raising the possibility that the shooter may have been unaware of his presence. Investigators from Dan Sai Police Station are continuing to collect evidence and pursue leads to apprehend the shooter. Mr. Somjit’s body will be sent to Loei Hospital tomorrow for an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death as the investigation continues. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-14 -

He also reassured the crowd that he is not influencing Prime Minister Paetongtarn "Ing" Shinawatra. In his speech, Thaksin praised Ing, saying he had seen leadership potential in her from a young age. He also expressed optimism about achieving the government’s minimum wage increase target to THB 400. Addressing the crowd of red-shirt supporters, Thaksin spoke warmly of his fondness for Udon Thani residents, recalling that many owned buffaloes when he left Thailand 18 years ago. Thaksin shared personal reflections, saying that his years abroad required resilience and meditation to stay balanced. He committed to supporting the local Buddhist community and encouraged people to focus on family well-being, steer clear of excessive gambling, and avoid debt traps. He explained how Ing has been dedicated to addressing household debt and poverty. Thaksin denied any interference in Ing’s political decisions, describing his approach as respectful of her independence. Instead, he focuses on providing guidance and support. Thaksin reiterated his strong stance against the drug trade, vowing to address it in collaboration with the police force, aiming to end corruption in police appointments and to eliminate illegal drugs from Thai communities. 93 Year Old Woman Killed in Kitchen Gas Explosion, Bangkok
A tragic incident claimed the life of a 93-year-old woman on November 13, when a gas leak exploded in her kitchen, igniting a fire in her home. The incident took place around 14.00 in a three-story townhouse on Soi Udom Suk 5 in the Huai Khwang district of Bangkok. Police Lieutenant Colonel Rakkiat Patumwan, an investigator from Suthisan Police Station, received the fire report and immediately coordinated with the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department, forensic officers, medical personnel from Ramathibodi Hospital, and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation to inspect the scene. Upon arrival, responders found a small fire had damaged the kitchen area on the first floor, particularly around a 15 kilogram gas cylinder and stove. The body of the victim, identified as Mrs. Kaesorn was found on the kitchen floor. Her clothing and body showed extensive fire and burn damage, and a preliminary inspection revealed remnants of food on the stove and minor fire damage around the kitchen. Neighbours reported that Mrs. Kaesorn had been living alone in the house. At the time of the explosion, they heard a loud bang and noticed smoke billowing from her home. Several neighbours quickly intervened, using chemical fire extinguishers to douse the flames and close the gas valve before removing the gas cylinder to outside. They then alerted the authorities and contacted the victim’s relatives, who live nearby. Initial investigations suggest that Mrs. Kaesorn may have been preparing to heat food when a gas leak from either the hose or gas valve was ignited. The ensuing flame caused a catastrophic explosion. Forensic teams examined the scene for further insights into the incident, as the investigation continues. The victim’s body was transported to Ramathibodi Hospital for an autopsy.
