Thailand ‘Asia’s fourth-biggest source of DDoS attacks’

Thailand ranks fourth on a list of countries in the Asia-Pacific region from which DDoS attacks originate.

 

The list compiled by Nexusguard has China at the top as the source of 61.16 per cent of all distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the region.

It’s followed by Vietnam (9.52 per cent) and India (7.33 per cent) and indicates that Thailand is the source of 3.63 per cent of the attacks.

 

Noting the significant damage that DDoS attacks can cause private businesses, Nexusguard and its partner, the Secure Network Operation Centre (Snoc), are pitching the Web Application Firewall (WAF), which they say can fight off massive DDoS attacks of up to 3 terabytes per second (Tbps). 

 

Nexusguard’s DDoS threat report for 2018 Q4 ranked Asian countries and said DDoS attacks averaged 176 gigabits per second (Gbps) per IP prefix last year and caused 18 days, 21 hours and 59 minutes of system downtime.

 

Snoc chief technical officer Visrut Manunpon said DDoS attacks reported in Thailand in 2018 consumed bandwidth of up to 14Gbps and caused system downtime of four hours. 

 

Most attacks went through communications service providers, Internet service providers and cloud service providers to indirectly affect businesses that do transactions or deliver online applications on multi-tenant platforms. 

 

These companies’ websites become unavailable and they could neither respond to requests nor serve customers, thereby losing business opportunities and suffering harm to their brand reputation. 

 

“They even lose customers to their competitors,” Visrut said.

 

“We found that 70 per cent of companies in Thailand use an average bandwidth of 100 megabits or 1 gigabit, and only 10 per cent can afford a huge investment for 10GB bandwidth deployment,” he said. 

 

“With the proliferation of the Internet of Things, it’s possible to perform DDoS attacks with larger bandwidth by using various kinds of devices at any location.”

 

The Web Application Firewall and “Security as a Service” are being offered for the first time in Thailand and have the claimed potential to save customers’ capital expenses by over six times. 

 

The two firms are offering “end-to-end, 24x7 services”, including WAF, Original Protection that prevents volumetric DDoS attacks and balances load to help avoid server downtime, and DNS protection to ensure website security and availability.

 

“We have previously collaborated with service providers such as CAT and INET to help them protect their infrastructure from DDoS attacks,” Visrut said.

 

Snoc currently provides security services to five of the 10 largest financial institutions, two-thirds of leading online game companies, and more than 150 websites in Thailand, he said. 

 

It plans to expand its customer base in sectors including financial service companies, data centres, e-commerce, online game providers, mobile application providers and ASPs and expects revenue to increase by Bt40 million – an increase of more than 100 per cent from last year.
