HM King gives royal approval to four upcountry tram and electric train projects

Four tram and electric train projects have come closer to reality after they were given approval in a Royal Decree.

His Majesty the King has given the royal go-ahead for projects in Chiang Mai, Pangnga, Phuket and Nakorn Ratchasima.

The orders of the king to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand are effective immediately.

Is this level of approval required?

Was new to me too.

Thought they might have gotten it to ensure the projects and funding survive a transition of government.  The gold seal approval would be virtually unassailable.

Proponents of the "20 Year Plan" think so. And while I'm no fan of the junta, whatever money this infrastructure costs would have been otherwise pissed away on a gondola up Doi Luang or a water slide connecting Mae Hong Song and Phitsuanalok, so it's progress, Thai style.

Right, I like it, was just curious if this was required or just prudent.

I think the latest constitution was designed to make this kind of approval a fixture of government. The reasoning being, from what I can glean from Thai friends, is that a dynasty has a legacy to maintain and polish, while perhaps more mercenary members of the body politic, do not.

Which century?????

Anything that can be done to improve mass transit is a step forward for the nation. Anything. It especially needs to happen on Samui, where the taxi mafia is deeply entrenched, and there is no way to get from Nathon to the east coast of the island for less than many hundred baht. That is silly. Same for Phuket. The rest of the nation could benefit too.

Many areas of Bangkok are being transformed by the new trains. In my area of Ratchayothin it is not just the trains and the roads but a huge amount of condo building and retail change. It's exciting and quite fast paced. The area needed a makeover and it is getting one. We have had to endure several years of chaos but the light is at the end of the tunnel - literally! I will be leaving the car and maybe even the bike in the parking lot and taking the train a lot when the Green Line extension is finished next year. In addition many people are suggesting - and hoping - that our properties have increased in value and rental potential.

Rooster

Trams, didn't notice that before. It's my favorite form of transportation, scratch this one and get them to Pattaya.

If the artists impressions are anything to go by I wonder how long it will take imaginative motorists and motorbikes to figure a way to use the tram tracks as additional traffic lanes when the going gets slow.

What about Koan Kaehn electric light train? Its been on the "go ahead" for a couple of years.

"The orders of the king to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand are effective immediately."

Non-execution of Royal orders are reprimanded under article 112 - lese majeste hence these four cities are lucky enough to get beautiful and useful public transport systems for sure.

Hmmh, now I feel really happy and relaxed by the word of King!

How about giving approval for a train line from Chang Mai to Ubon through Khon Kaen and a few other places? That would be a good idea.

Mass Public transport is the future and a vital step to erradicate air pollution. Provided it's efficient, cheap and practical for the masses.

How about a proper and direct public transport line between Suvarnabhumi Airport and downtown Bangkok (that is with no changing of trains, MRT, BTS required).

They have decided to run it under the new beach expansion.

Well done King !!   and well done Khun Prayut Chan O Cha for pushing it through.

Thailand is and has developed more infrustructure in the past 3 years than most countries have done in their past 10 years.

Australia is a prime example, apart from the highways and some inner city infrustructure, it has not done any major projects or big infrustructure for a decade.

Japan has has high speed trains for 40-50 years and in Australia they are still talking about it.

Well done Thailand on the BTS, rail projects and many more.  !!!

Yes Steven100, Thailand, which was once on a level playing field with the likes of South Korea is now striding ahead of Laos once more.
