THAI people plan to travel overseas by an average 3.9 trips in 2019 – higher than other countries in the Asia Pacific and even across the globe, according to the latest survey by Visa.

According to the 500-sample survey in 27 countries, people in the Asia Pacific plan to travel an average 2.8 trips this year, while the global average is 2.7 trips in 2019 – well below the Thai overseas plans for 3.9 trips.

Meanwhile, travel spending by Thai people would increase from an average Bt49,135.68 per trip to Bt73,670.80 per trip in this year and 2020, Visa Thailand’s country manager, Suripong Tantiyanon, said recently.

Following the high overseas travel spending using credit cards in the first quarter of the year saw to rising, for example First Choice Credit card reported 30 per cent increase when compared to the same period of last year. KTC also forecasts that spending for travel will increase by up to 55 per cent in the first quarter of this year, and continue to rise over the rest of 2019.

The top five destinations for Thai people to travel were Japan (64 per cent), Hong Kong (37 per cent), Singapore (29 per cent), South Korea (21 per cent) and China (16 per cent). The first four destinations will remain on the list for the year 2020, the survey found.

Did they question the 500 Thais in the Thai Airways First Class Lounge?

I'm not a statistician, but that seems like a very small sample size. Visa seems to have a habit of releasing these silly surveys. Durex, the condom maker, does too.

I'm not a statistician, either, but I play one on TV. This story REEKS.

What is this foolish item? so they can forcast how many trips 60+ million Thais will take this year? 500 samples in 27 countries? there are 195 countries and they only sampled 27? must be a slow day to come up with this space filler...

3.9 trips per year, did they also asked how long those trips were? Mostly they only take a trips for long weekends 3 or 4 days.

My friends are taking summer holidays of 4 weeks and winter trips of 3 to 4 weeks, that's only 2 trip per year, that is the difference. not counting the short weekend trips they make.

What a nonsense.

Is a trip from Nong Khai across the river into Laos to visit a relatives sick buffalo classed as world travel ?

Does this mean 0.1 trips are one way???

Bull sh*t.

what is the percentage of poor, average,  middle class, elite & super elite again in thailand

So Thais spend an average of almost 300,000 baht a year on travel costs (73,670.80 x4) when the average GDP per capita is just over 180,000.  Very plausible.

Where do they get this information from? Thais travel more than Japanese and Koreans? Really? Out of 68,000,000 Thais, how many do you think have the disposable income to travel overseas? The average Thai cannot even get a visa to travel to the West, unless they have a small fortune in the bank. So, how many? 2 million? Maybe 3 million people? That makes them the largest body of travelers in Asia Pacific?

And how do they know that they will spend 50% more than last year on their trips?

This entire news item could not possibly be less accurate.

This is 100% reliable and absolutely true. I routinely notice the motorcycle taxi puchais on my Soi reading through travel brochures and hear them comparing frequent flyer plans while waiting for their next customers. And the som tam lady has wonderful photos of her recent trip to Switzerland. Yes, it’s a brave new world and Thailand leads the way again.

Comparing averages says little to nothing about individuals, majorities and minorities. If one walks around in Thailand, espescially in the rural areas, it becomes very clear that most of the Thai population are no travelers at all.

Thailand, please slow down a bit, the rest of the world is having trouble keeping up with you! :whistling:

This is the official list of countries with the most outbound travellers. Thailand doesn't even make the top 10. Hong Kong is the highest at 4.3. Norway is second at 2.0.

But this worthless Visa survey is only of people who PLAN to travel which in reality means nothing.

Perhaps Visa will next produce a survey of people planning to win the lottery and the Thais will come out on top again.

Wishing for, or considering a holiday trip is one thing. But how many of them actually survive the journey on Thai roads to the airport?

What a load of bull...

Average Thai wage of around 300 baht per 10 plus hour day. The economy decreasing. The cost of living rocketing with far fewer investors plus tourists! I do not beleive this report at all.

Most Thai are up to their neck in credit debt...

A classic example as to how you can rig a survey to produce the desired results!

Visa should be ashamed to publish this as it is so obviously BS.

That is not the average wage. That is minimum wage. There are alot of high earners in Thailand. But, not enough to travel as much as this guy says, and we are only talking about a few million, out of a nation of 68 million. I do agree that most Thais are struggling financially. But, then again so are most Americans!

Probably because they can’t get a visa

Garbage journalism

They asked 500 people who were taking to travel agents?????

I asked 10 people on the bus if they owned a car.  9 said no.

BREAKING NEWS:  ONLY 1 in 10 people own a car

Then I went to McD's and asked 10 people if they liked diets....

blah blah blah
