Hi

Does anyone know where, and how to get a motorcycle that has been imported into Thailand, registered and given a green book here in Thailand? I've been told there are two different charges for this, 50000 and 80000, when the higher charge is made the bike is usally inspected. If anyone has any more information about this two thier charge and any info about the inspection, please let me know. Also what paper work for the bike and myself will i need to register it.

Where to start???? First, used motorcycles are not allowed to be imported into Thailand unless you are the owner and have been for over one and one-half years before permanently moving to Thailand. You must have the title from the country you moved from, the export-import papers and a letter from the Thai Ministry of Commerce giving you permission to bring the bike into Thailand. However, used bikes are smuggled into Thailand all the time, some are bikes broken down and called "spare parts" others are whole bikes brought in by other means. One way or another some of these bikes get registered. None of it is legal. Nuff said.

Are you saying every bike i see being riden on the highways, that is not made in Thailand, is illegally registered? I find this hard to believe as there are so many for sale, for hire and being riden every where i have travelled in Thailand.

I stand corrected if I've spoken in too general a term. The law is still on the books that importation of used motorcycles, used cars and used parts for same are not allowed. We can go together to Customs and you can read it for yourself. The Ministry of Commerce also published a pamphlet explaining this very law and what your options are to bring in a used bike or car.

Certainly every big bike in Thailand is not illegally registered. Prior to the fall of the baht in '98 this law didn't exist. At first the law stipulated no import of bikes or cars, period. Then the goverment backed off and said new cars and bikes can be imported provided all the paperwork is in order and all the fees are paid. So there are a lot of bikes properly registered, both pre '98 and new bikes like BMW's and Harleys. The question is why wasn't the bike you are buying registered by the previous owner? Does the paperwork that comes with the bike explain all of this to the satisfaction of the DMV? Why should the seller put the load on you to do all of this? If the seller truely believes the bike can be properly registered then you should both go to the DMV together and start the paperwork. You pay the fees. If it all falls through then you're only out the fees you paid not the money you would have spent buying the bike.

Ajahnlau, I cannot say with any certainty what goes on in each and every DMV office across Thailand as they all seem to set their own rules. My experiences with Phuket and Chiang Mai DMV offices proved that out. Registering gray market big bikes is not a cut and dry operation IMHO.

I have just bought a bike with the green book but was also thinking of getting one with just invoices, after speaking to few people i decieded to get one already registered. My wife spoke to some gentleman at one of the registration offices and if it does not go through the inspection, then it no retry which leaves you with a pretty much un-saleable bike.!! Which is probaly what half of these bikes with just invoices are!!

I'll just say from personal experience be VERY VERY careful. Every DMV office is different in the paperwork they require - some look at every number on the bike, some don't. some require a "moo baan" from buyer and seller, some don't, etc...., and what passes in the provinces will NOT pass in BKK. If the bike has been painted you better have a receipt for the paint job. A dodgy book and paperwork can get the book and bike confiscated. No more used bikes for me. My next bike will be brand new bought from the dealer Ducati.
