A government spokesman said that 202 vehicles were seized from drink drivers on Thursday, the recognized first day of the Songkran holidays.

Sirijan Ngathong of the National Council of Peace and Order said the government are working with the police and other agencies to tackle drink driving.

Some 158 motorcycles and 44 cars were confiscated on April 11th.

In all there were 2,344 driving offences recorded that led to bike and car licences being taken and the prosecution of drivers and riders in 1,168 cases, she said.

A total of 141 licences were seized.

One assumes that the other 1,027 drivers/riders didn't have driving licenses?

Its a start .. Police need to be far more unremitting in apprehension of offenders and courts much more swingeing in the penalties for drunk driving .. Thai society also needs to come to terms with the fact it is socially unacceptable now .. And it needs to happen everyday of the year or the quite shameful casualty figures on the roads here will continue ..

No good seizing them and giving them back the next day; crush them and just watch how fast the number of offenders goes down !

And why not let the offenders get the benefit of pushing the button themselves? Could even be a TV show, in particular drunk driving hi-sos crushing their luxery vehicles.

Drink driving/riding you should automatically gets 6 months in the local barracks... attitude adjustment.

Should be enough time to dry-out & think about your actions!

Cause an accident without injuries it should be a year.

Injure or kill anyone it should be attempted manslaughter or actual manslaughter charges !

Day 2

Vehicles 202 : Fatalities 105

How about taking away the cell phones from all police at roadside checkpoints and they may actually start doing their job.

They got 202 and missed 1202 drink drivers Its all just for show Be interesting to see the road toll

There needs to be a complete cultural shift in attitudes towards drink driving.

I don’t know any Thai male who doesn’t drink drive.

Just last night we were at my friends house drinking with 7 Thai men. Each respected in their positions - each drinking, each driving.

We even had the drink driving discussion... the response is always the same that they would drive carefully and slowly.

Until it becomes the norm that society genuinely finds drink drivers socially and morally wrong there will be little change. As it stands the majority of the population simply doesn’t care about drinking and driving, they never expect anything could happen to them.

Which is less than the WHO figures of ~24300 road deaths per year in Thailand...

Which is 67 per day....

Over the 2 days that’s 29 less than the national yearly average...

Is Songkran Safer??????

Yes. And this is not a one off either. It's happened every Songkran for the last 5 years that I've been here. Interesting topic for speculation as to why that is so.

Is not the 105 confirmed dead a scene, I would say another 210 DOA and died or will die due their injuries.

Only 202. Just image how many they would have got had they stepped outside their roadside tents.

Ditto.

I think it is. Most accidents happens when people are going to meet their families before the Songkran starts, or returning back home.

If the Police actually caught 202 drink drivers, then its fair to assume that this figure is only probably 10% or less of the actual number who were drink driving and were not caught.

Horrendous thought that there were at least 2,020 ( MIN )  people out there drink driving on just one day.

Surely, if they did that then the S*** would hit the fan and at this time of the year, they could just stand around, as usual, and get hosed down instead of doing that to the general public.

'nuf sed.

There is a fair chance they are drunk from what I have witnessed in the past couple of days????

the first day WAS FRIDAY the 12 th April.....how did it change to Thursday the 11th APRIL ????????

Out of how many millions?  Come back when you sober up?

It is always very impressive when the police here engage in police work, and show some concern for public safety. Amazing actually.

You mention Thai males. You do not know any foreigners who drink and drive?
