Nearly 1,000 road accidents occurred in the first two days of the “Seven Dangerous Days” of Songkran this year.

On Thursday and Friday, 105 people killed and 1,001 injured in 969 road accidents, said Worawit Techasupakur, an assistant minister to the Tourist and Sport Minister, on Saturday.

Nationwide, Nakhon Si Thammarat recorded the highest number of  accident at 43, while Lop Buri had the most fatalities at seven and Nakhon Ratchasima recorded the highest number of injuries at 50.

According to the statistics, most of the accidents took place on highways and roads in villages and sub-districts.

Authorities have urged provinces to put restrictive measures in all main, minor as well as community roads, including roads around midnight Songkran events, he said.

I note that these statistics were announced by the "Tourism and Sports" Ministry.   One could read something into that,I suppose...

  • Yup, death on the roads is definitely a Thai sport.

Yep, Prayut, Prawit, entire Thai Gov't & RTP initiative of 5 - 10% reduction in road deaths & injuries working really well ....NOT!!! Complete failure!!

Pathetic efforts no strong Policing of Road Laws; buck-passing responsibilities onto "..provinces", Minister Prawit needs to show some authority & push RTP to perform duties of upholding Road Laws or He should quit!!

wish they would break down the accident statistics into male and female.

"Authorities have urged provinces to put restrictive measures in all main, minor as well as community roads..."

Now all they need to do is explain to province officials what a "restrictive measure" is. Forethought and preventative measures are foreign concepts to a culture in which Mai Pen Rai trumps any type of planning or responsible action.

New tricks and old ponies comes to mind.

105 "official" road fatalities on first two days of Songkran. Except war zones, the only chance to see a carnage like this outside LOS is, if you throw a bloody chicken bone into a piranha basin.

Yep the Thai have the tent check points they just sit talk drink kinda a little party not sure what they really do TIT

Minus 10 percent to last year. Long live the Fuehrer..sorry..General.

These 105 deads within two days are only the ones who died straight at the scene. Dying in an ambulance or later in hospital does not count.

yea, just before songkran the grinning transport minister was up for a photo op surrounded by young, attractive females and spouting vacuous nonsense about road safety over songkran. where is he now?!

"...most of the accidents took place on highways and roads in villages and sub-districts."

To paraphrase Chef in Apocalypse Now "Never get out of the parking lot"

He won't be sitting in one of the many open-air tents at the side of the road, chatting with the police.

Perhaps he's road-testing some of those pretties?

Then when the alcohol wears off (non-DUI of course) he'll wake up from that dream.

And why? To see that around 90% of the accidents were caused by male drivers?

Thais are handed a driving licence upon payment of a fee. No driving skills or practice is required.

Expect more deaths.

Amazing insight.

I think the NATION could save some time by just paste and copy the article about these terrible accidents from last year. Just change the year. All done.

'' most of the accidents took place on highways and roads in villages and sub-districts.''..... well who would have thought it ? Surely there are other places to have accidents !! I notice the Police in the roadside tents busy on their i-phones as the overloaded pickups and hooligan motorcyclists roar by . Come to think of it, it was the same last year and the year before and the years before that !!

Been here 12 years and still haven't worked out the purpose of those roadside tents every Songkran

It's easier to count up to 50 with 10 Fingers than to count hundreds of thousands if you have only your two hands. Good that we have no Sharia law here. Otherwise you would see here a lot of people with one hand only.......... And then results to come would take ages

Trying to clear the mush from his one brain cell, and making right fist of it.

I am left wondering where these accidents might have happened if not ‘on roads and highways....’

Recently, driving through the wall of a multi-storey car park and dropping eight floors to the ground.

This is getting OLD and Boring....I'm numb. I see it like the Thais now...if they don't care, I DO NOT care...

With the Thai government it's really Wishful thinking !!! when they need rain, they say it's going to rain next week despite international forecasts not seen a thing !!! Same with road fatalities they say they will reduce road fatalities 5 - 10 %,...without really doing anything,...?!?!? just wishful thinking !!!!!

I‘ve been trying to understand this myself. Officers facing away from the traffic with their heads buried in their cell phones. Surely, there must be an explanation.....
