BANGKOK, 13 April 2019 (NNT) - Many people in Bangkok and from the provinces have joined in the Songkran festival at Lumpini park where art and cultural performances and a Songkran beauty pageant are being held on Saturday evening.

The Songkran festival in Lumpini park in Bangkok is being staged to preserve Thai traditions on the theme: Bangkok’s Songkran Splashes Happiness For Everyone the Thai Way.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has called on members of the public to play with water in a decent, traditional fashion without talcum powder, skimpy dresses, alcoholic beverages or highly-compressed water pistols and with the water-saving awareness.

Many people and foreign tourists attended the water pouring ceremony for Phra Buddha Sihing on such an auspicious, prosperous occasion and viewed 50 Bangkok districts’ outstanding goods, community-based goods and Thai food for sale.

A Songkran beauty pageant was held in the style of the Rattanakosin era. The Songkran child pageant was won by Irish Hiablaem, the Songkran beauty pageant was won by Sasima Saengsawang and a transgender pageant was won by Yanisa Phloy-ngam. The Bangkok governor presented awards to each of the pageant winners.

The art and cultural performances began at 5.00 p.m. and ends at 10.00 p.m.

Meanwhile, to accommodate Songkran festival activities on Silom road, Thung Mahamek police station temporarily closes the road to traffic from 12.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m. on April 13 and April 15 and is setting up screening points to keep revelers from bringing alcoholic beverages, lethal weapons, talcum powder, or highly-compressed water pistols and to deter pickpockets and those in skimpy dresses.
