Cabinet endorses 13.2 billion baht giveaways for welfare card holders

The Thai Cabinet has approved 13.2 billion baht in handouts for low income-earners, including parents with children still in school, farmers and disabled people, under the welfare card program.

At the same meeting on Tuesday, the Cabinet also agreed to launch tax packages to boost the real estate and tourism sectors.

Mr. Natthaporn Jatusripitak, an advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office Minister, said Tuesday that, under the welfare card program, low-income parents with children still at school will receive 500 baht for each child who is still a minor, while farmers who hold welfare cards will get 1,000 baht each.

Is this what a caretaker government should be doing?

Is this story available in Thai language? My wife's mother doesn't believe it.

Still determined to give money away, before the election it would

be called vote buying, after the election ,and been a caretaker

government, should they be doing this, its good for the needy,

but questionable for the government to be doing this .

regards worgeordie

How can this be vote buying after elections. look forward to the spin on this

It was on the Thai TV news for a couple of days.  My wife's reaction was priceless. 'he should spend the money getting the economy right, then the poor people wouldn't need handouts'.  I guess that she spent far too long in the UK and in a Tory voting household.

We all know what happens to funds allocated to the disabled. It gets stolen by thieves operating within the civil service. Will this be the same?

Before we announce the Prime Minister of the Thai government...we want to prime the citizens...

How can you be disgruntled with a government that hands out free cash?

How is this funded - out of tax revenues and/or deficit spending?

Does the Prayut government care?

Either will constrain what economic policies the next government can implement even though elected on certain planned economic policies. It is further likely that the current NLA will pass the FY 2021 budget ending September 31, 2021 that the next government will have little input.

"At the same meeting on Tuesday, the Cabinet also agreed to launch tax packages to boost the real estate and tourism sectors." Tax packages that further reduce tax revenues available to the next government.

In a recent article Fiscal package aims to boost domes:  http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/Economy/30368637

  • “If the [next] government is not much different from this government, it [budget] could be used in time at the beginning date of fiscal year (2020) and no budget review was expected. But a different government could delay use of the budget as there could be a review, new budgeting in details. In the past, in some fiscal years, the annual expenditure budget bill came into force late in that fiscal year,”

A "different" government is essentially limited on budget options and burdened with even more debt.

Why not?

Because they're 'caretaker'. Clue's in the name.
