(Reuters) - Country House was declared the winner of the 145th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday when Maximum Security became the first horse in the history of the race to be disqualified after crossing the line first.

Country House's team raised an objection to Maximum Security's win, saying the 4-1 favourite's wide turn heading into the stretch slowed down other horses on the sloppy track in rainy Louisville.

Code of Honor finished second and Tacitus was third.

The field was one of the most wide open in years after favourite Omaha Beach was scratched on Friday due to a breathing problem.

The 1-1/4 mile race, called the "fastest two minutes in sports," featured the largest guaranteed purse of $3 million and played out before more than 150,000 fans that packed the grandstands and infield of Churchill Downs.

3 million is not the largest purse, the Everest in Sydney has a AUD$10 million purse.

I think they meant the largest Kentucky Derby purse, The richest purse in The Dubai Derby, this year it was 35 million USD

Maybe more to this story:
Maximum Security had jumped a puddle on the rain-soaked track and slid to the outside, not only impeding the progress of a rival, War of Will, but also forcing that colt’s rider, Tyler Gaffalione, to squeeze his knees and wrangle the reins just to stay aboard. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/04/sports/kentucky-derby-live.html

Sliding to the outside? Let this (truncated) picture speaks for itself:

In the outside track under these conditions is not a place a rider wants to be.

  • While it is raining, the rail will enjoy the biggest edge and horses coming slightly off the pace or from well back has to be much the best to even have a shot - water builds along the rail first and most tracks drain towards the middle of the track.
  • A hour or so after the rain stops, the drainage will usually have work well enough that the rail and 3-4 paths out becomes the place to be, but speed/pace type horses still has a decent edge.
  • On the other hand off the pace type and late runners can usually find enough room in these paths and if kick back(mud) does not bother them, can make a solid run in the stretch and even win if a pace battle develops.
